Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Viking quarterback joined the "30 Interception Club" in his final season in 1978, by giving up 32?

Answer: Fran Tarkenton

The others were quarterbacks, but never played for the Vikings. In 18 seasons, Tarkenton had thrown over 20 interceptions only twice. In the middle of his career, Fran went to the New York Giants for five seasons before coming back home to Minnesota. In his final season, Fran still threw for 3468 yards and 25 touchdowns, but had the 32 interceptions.
2. Who was the only coach to win a championship in both the NFL and AFL, and he did it with the Colts and Jets?

Answer: Weeb Ewbank

Ewbank was the head coach of the Baltimore Colts from 1954-1963. The Colts won two NFL Championships, both over the Giants. He then took the reins of the Jets of the AFL in 1963, to a 1968 winning season and defeated the Colts in Super Bowl III. Weeb retired in 1973 after 20 seasons.
3. From 1990-1993, this Bear quarterback from Michigan turned into Mike Ditka's whipping boy, being blamed for everything that went wrong. With his new team in 1995, he led the league with over 2500 passing yards, and led those Colts to the AFC Championship game. Who was this quarterback?

Answer: Jim Harbaugh

The others were all defensive linemen. 1995 was Jim's only Pro Bowl season. In 1996, he threw for over 2600 yards also. The Pittsburgh Steelers squelched Harbaugh's hopes in the AFC Championship game. Pittsburgh won the game, 20-16.
4. The 1995 NFC wildcard playoff game set a record for scoring with the Lions losing 58-37. Who was the winning team that was led by Rodney Peete?

Answer: Eagles

Peete did play for all the other teams listed, but he helmed the Eagles in 1995, while Randall Cunningham took the backseat. This was Cunningham's last season in Philadelphia, before signing with the Vikings. In the record-setting scoring game, the Lions had Don Majkowski come off the bench and throw three touchdowns in his losing cause.
5. The New Orleans Saints began their franchise in 1967. In their first play ever in the opening-game kickoff, John Gilliam ran it back all the way for the Saints' score. How many seasons would the Saints play before they had a winning season?

Answer: 20

It would not be until 1987 that the Saints had a stellar season. In 1987, New Orleans went 12-3 behind the arm of Bobby Hebert. They lost in the NFC wildcard game to the Vikings, 44-10. It would not be until 1994 before the Saints had another losing season.
6. Which 49er kicker was best known for making 234 consecutive extra points, and retired in 1969?

Answer: Tommy Davis

The others were all running backs. Davis played for 11 seasons. He missed only two extra points in his entire career! When he retired in 1969, he was also number two by averaging 44.7 yards per punt in a career.
7. Which 15-season Ram and 49er linebacker was nicknamed 'Hacksaw'?

Answer: Jack Reynolds

The others were all tight ends. The nickname fit Reynolds' on-field personality also. He played for 11 seasons with the Rams, then four with San Francisco before retiring in 1984. Jack was named to two Pro Bowls in 1975 and 1980.
8. Who was the New York Giants' first ever 1000-yard rusher?

Answer: Ron Johnson

The other greats never played for the Giants. After spending his rookie season in Cleveland, Johnson signed with the Giants in 1970. This resulted in his 1027 rushing yards, along with his 48 receptions and 12 total touchdowns. In 1972, he ran for another 1182 yards. Those were Ron's only Pro Bowl seasons. He retired in 1975 after seven seasons.
9. Which Hall of Fame quarterback threw a record seven touchdown passes for the Bears in an embarrassing 56-7 rout of the Giants, then went on to win the NFL Championship in 1943?

Answer: Sid Luckman

This was in the ninth week of the season. The following week, the Bears suffered their only loss of the season to the Redskins. They finished the regular season with a 8-1-1 record, then had their revenge and won the NFL Championship game against those Redskins. Luckman was a 12-season Chicago Bear. He retired with 137 passing, and four rushing touchdowns.
10. In a historical 1968 game, the Jets were winning over the Raiders 32-29. With one minute remaining, NBC cut away from the game to begin a movie. While the fans were watching the beginning of the movie, the Raiders pulled the game out 43-32. Irate fans lit up the NBC call-center about which children's movie?

Answer: Heidi

This game was the sacrificial lamb for television networks to realize that a game isn't over until its over. The Raiders went on to finish the season 12-2. They lost the AFL Championship game to the Jets.
