Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a stretch of 11 seasons beginning in 1967, this team reached the AFL or AFC Championship game an amazing nine times. In this stretch, they also made it to two Super Bowls. Which team was this?

Answer: Oakland Raiders

The other teams did not exist in the 1960s. Under the helm of John Madden in nine of those 11 seasons, the Raiders won a Super Bowl and lost one. In this run, Oakland had an amazing team record of 119-28-7. Their Super Bowl loss was at the hands of the Packers, and their win was over the Vikings.
2. This Eagle quarterback led the league five times in being sacked. In 1986, his team allowed him to set a record with 72. His back-up quarterbacks were sacked another 32 times also. Strange enough, this quarterback was known to be a scrambler. Who was it?

Answer: Randall Cunningham

Cunningham saw 11 seasons with the Eagles before moving to Minnesota. Although he led the league many times in being sacked, he still threw for over 2500 yards in seven seasons. From Minnesota in 1997 to Dallas in 2000, Randall retired in 2001 as a Raven.
3. The Rams' first pick in the 1996 draft, this running back led the team in rushing, but his average along with his off-field issues were too much for the team. He was traded to Miami for the 1997 season, but after only two games, came back to the Rams. Who was this running back?

Answer: Lawrence Phillips

The others were all kickers. In 1997, Phillips ran for one more yard, 633 in 10 games with the Rams, compared to 632 in 15 games in 1996. The Rams would not renew his contract ane he sat out the 1998 season. He signed with the 49ers for the '99 season, but played in only eight games. That was it for Lawrence's career.
4. His first coach after three seasons with the Eagles beginning in 1987, Buddy Ryan released this wide receiver stating, "All he can do is catch touchdowns". In 1994 with the Vikings he caught 122 passes and duplicated that total the following season. He had eight consecutive 1000-yard reception seasons with the Vikings. Who was this wide receiver that made Ryan eat his words?

Answer: Cris Carter

Both Allen and Butkus were linebackers, and Moss didn't begin his career until 1998. After spending three seasons in Philadelphia under Buddy Ryan from 1987-1989, Cris took his services to Minnesota, where he won seven Pro Bowl honors. After 16 seasons, Carter retired with 1101 receptions, 130 of those being for touchdowns.
5. Two star NFL players sat out the 1963 season on a suspension for gambling. One player was Paul Hornung, a running back for the Packers. Who was the other Lion defensive tackle that was suspended also?

Answer: Alex Karras

The others were all defensive linemen, but never played for the Lions. Karras was a career Lion and played from 1958-1970. He was a tremendous player until the suspension, still played for another seven seasons, but could not regain his old form. After retiring, he became a sports commentator and actor.
6. After Sterling Sharpe was forced to retire due to injuries after the 1994 season, the Packers were left empty-handed at the wide receiver position. Which fourth-year pro stepped up his game and caught 102 passes for the Pack in 1995?

Answer: Robert Brooks

The others never played for Green Bay. Brooks, in his fourth season all with the Packers, caught 102 for 1497 yards with 13 touchdowns. Robert had only one other 1000 yard season in 1997. He played his eighth and final season with the Broncos in 2000 before hanging up his cleats. Ironically, Brooks and Sharpe both went to South Carolina.
7. This South Carolina offensive lineman had his start with the San Francisco 49ers in 1951. His career was interrupted by the Korean War and was discharged in 1954. He signed up with the Redskins for the '54 season, but didn't make it through the entire season. He died of a heart attack. Who was it?

Answer: Kenny Stabler

Stabler played for 15 seasons, and 10 of those with the Raiders during their fantastic run from 1967-1977. Kenny quarterbacked the team along with Daryle Lamonica and George Blanda. Three quality QBs on the same team had to result in something positive, and it did. Kenny was a four-time Pro Bowl selection, but wasn't picked in his finest season of 1979. Stabler completed 304 passes for 3615 yards with 22 touchdowns in that season.

After Oakland, he played for the Oilers and Saints, then retired in 1984.
9. The Giants' 1990 season became dismal when their quarterback, Phil Simms, went down with injuries late in the season. Which back-up QB took the reins, upset the 49ers in the NFC title game, then upset the Buffalo Bills in the Super Bowl?

Answer: Jeff Hostetler

The others never played for the Giants. Hostetler was in his fifth season when he had his chance to step up. Because of his performance, new coach Ray Handley made Jeff his number one quarterback for the '91 season. The Giants went 8-8 and Hostetler took the blame for the season. In 1993, Jeff became a Raider, then retired in 1997 as a Washington Redskin.
10. Which quarterback was the first in AFL history to throw for over 4000 yards in a season, and later retired as a Los Angeles Ram?

Answer: Joe Namath

Broadway Joe was only in his third season. As a New York Jet from 1965-1976, he threw for 4007 yards with 26 touchdowns in the 1967 season. He also threw 28 interceptions. His receivers were Don Maynard and George Sauer who combined for 146 catches, then his running backs combined for another 77, with Bob Mathis hauling in 25.

The Jets finished the '67 season 8-5-1, and didn't make the postseason. Namath retired in 1977 in a Rams uniform, his only non-Jet season.
