Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Whose record did Ichiro break at the end of the season?

Answer: George Sisler

Ichiro broke his record in the last home game series and ended the year with 262 hits. The previous record holder was George Sisler, who played for the St. Louis Browns and set the record in 1920.
2. Who was the only Mariner with a grand slam in the season?

Answer: Bret Boone

He was their second baseman and had 24 home runs during the season.
3. Which player placed on waivers and then went to the Yankees to make room for Bucky Jacobsen?

Answer: John Olerud

Olerud had played for the Mariners for nine years before being traded to the Yankees. He was a first baseman. Seattle was sad to see him go because of what he gave to the community such as hospital visits for kids and many other charities.
4. Which two players were traded to the White Sox for Miguel Olivio and another player in the minors?

Answer: Freddy Garcia and Ben Davis

Ben Davis had been sent down to the minors and Freddy Garcia cried when he left Safeco Field. Some fans thought that Freddy wouldn't be gone for long, but were soon proved wrong when he signed a three year deal with the White Sox.
5. Which player retired at the end of the season?

Answer: Edgar Martinez

Edgar grew up in Puerto Rico with his grandparents. He was signed when he was 18 by Marty Martinez. Towards the end of his minor league career, he was brought up to see what he could do only to be disappointed and sent back down. His most memorable hit was probably "the Double" against the Yankees during the play off game to force a game 7.
6. Who was brought up in 2004 and was seen as a probable starter in 2005?

Answer: Bobby Madritsch

He was brought up towards the middle of the season to see what he could do in the majors. Because of his spectacular pitching, he was seen as a probable starting pitcher for the 2005 season. Madritsch started only one game in 2005 (which he lost) and never again appeared in the majors!
7. Who was the youngest player on the team?

Answer: Jose Lopez

He was brought up towards the middle of the season and played shortstop for the M's. His first major league hit was August 1, 2004, in Anaheim, CA. His first major league home run was August 14, 2004, in Seattle against the Yankees.
8. Who was the oldest player on the team?

Answer: Jaime Moyer

Moyer was born in '62, Wilson and Boone were both born in '69, and Martinez was born in '63.
9. Who was moved up, only to be disappointed and sent back down in place of Clint Nageotte? He also pitched less than 30 innings.

Answer: Travis Blackley

It was said that he was sent back down to work on his control after he walked so many guys in the majors.
10. Who got fired at the end of the season?

Answer: Bob Melvin

Because of the horrible record that Seattle had this year, Melvin was fired. At the time, they didn't know who was going to replace him, but the new manager would be Mike Hargrove.
