Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Adam Malysz led the World Cup standings in 2000-2001. During that season he became the first man from his country to win Gold at the World Championships, and also first to win the Four Hills Tournament. Which country is he from?

Answer: Poland

On 23-Feb-01 Malysz became World Champion on the 90m hill at Lahti, Finland. He had a healthy lead over defending champion Martin Schmitt in the World Cup standings with several events left in the season, and went on to become World Cup champion that year.
2. Martin Schmitt had been World Cup champion in 1998-9 and 1999-2000. In February 2001 he successfully defended his title on the Big Hill at the World Championships, and helped his country defend their team title on the same hill. Which country?

Answer: Germany

Though he lost to Malysz in the season-long World Cup, Schmitt performed well at the World Championships.
3. In the 1997-98 season, Heung Chul Choi became the first man from his country to compete in a World Cup event, and the first to score World Cup points. Which country?

Answer: Korea

Choi scored a few points again in 2000-01, but did not break into the very top ranks.
4. Tommy Ingebrigtsen's best year was 1995 when he became both the Senior and the Junior World Champion on the big hill. He was still his country's leading jumper in 2001. Which country?

Answer: Norway

After good early season results, Tommy struck a patch of bad form in February 2001.
5. Masahiko Harada was the oldest competitor in 2001 at the age of 32. Which country did he represent?

Answer: Japan

'Happy' Harada always seemed to have a smile on his face, and he could still jump with the youngsters, despite his 'advanced' age.
6. Although Kristoffer Jaafs was born in Finland, he was the number one jumper for another country.

Answer: Sweden

Apparently, Jaafs was born in a town in Finland where everyone speaks Swedish!
7. Andreas Widhoelzl won the Four Hills Tournament in the 1999-2000 season but lost his chance to repeat as winner with a poor effort in the first event. He was left out of his country's team for the 2001 World Championships at Lahti. Which team was that?

Answer: Austria

Andi's form was a bit inconsistent.
8. At age 31, Jaroslav Sakala attempted to make a comeback to his form of the early 1990s. What country did he represent?

Answer: Czech Republic

Sakala had been competing as a privateer until some good results prompted the Czech officials to choose him for the 2001 World Championships team.
9. In the early '90s, Nicolas Dessum became the first man from this country to ever win a World Cup event.

Answer: France

Apologies for being vague about the date. It was before the 97-98 season when I started keeping records for myself and happened in Japan, I believe Sapporo. Nico struggled in the 2000-01 season, but remained France's best jumper.
10. The Hautamaeki brothers, Jussi and Matti, both had good seasons, yet neither was in their country's silver medal winning team on 24-Feb-01 at the World Championships in Lahti. Which country?

Answer: Finland

The Finns had so many good jumpers that there just was not room for these two in the team. Matti was included in the team for the 90 m hill on 25 Feb 2001, and helped them to their second silver medal.
