Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Boston Red Sox won the World Series in 2007 against the Colorado Rockies. This was the franchise's ____ World Series crown.

Answer: 7th

In 2007, Boston appeared in their 11th World Series, with their first being the first-ever World Series in 1903 as the Boston Americans with a win against the Pirates. The franchise made their 11th appearance in 2007 against the Rockies. Their series crowns came in 1903, 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 2004, and 2007. Both their 2004 and 2007 titles were provided by skunking the Cardinals and Rockies, four games to none.
2. The last appearance in the World Series made by the Chicago Cubs in the 20th century was in 1945. It was their 10th appearance in the promised land in a loss to the Tigers. The Cubs were seeking their ____ World Series title in that season.

Answer: 3rd

In five seasons from 1906-1910, the Cubs went to four World Series with three being consecutive. In 1907 and 1908 they won against the Tigers, but lost in 1906 to the White Sox and 1910 to the Athletics. Then they lost to the Red Sox in 1918, the Athletics in 1929, the Yankees in 1932, the Tigers in 1935, the Yankees in 1938, then the Tigers again in 1945. That would be it for the century.
3. The Dodgers' final World Series in Brooklyn was in 1955 before moving to the West Coast in 1958. They won that 1955 World Series against the New York Yankees. How many World Series titles was this for the Brooklyn franchise?

Answer: 1st

It was the eighth World Series appearance for the Dodger franchise in 1955, and they finally bagged the crown against the dominant Yankees. They had appeared in the big show in 1916, 1920, 1941, 1947, 1949, 1952, and 1953, all in a loss. They lost to the Yankees five times in those seven losses.
4. The Angels franchise began in 1961 as the Los Angeles Angels. In 2002, the franchise put down the San Francisco Giants four games to three. This was the Angels' ____ World Series appearance?

Answer: 1st

It was the Angels' first World Series appearance in 2002, after losing four ALCS' prior. The Angels were helmed by Mike Scioscia in 2002 and made it to the promised land with their 99-63 record. They made it to the series as the wildcard team, as did the Giants with their 95-66 season.

This was the first time in baseball history that both league wildcard teams faced each other in a World Series.
5. The Philadelphia Phillies franchise began in 1883 as the Philadelphia Quakers. They were World Series Champions in 2008 when they disposed of the Tampa Bay Rays. This was the ____ World Series crown for the Phillies.

Answer: 2nd

The Phillies first appeared in the big series in 1915 in a loss to the Red Sox. They waited until 1950 to make another appearance, but lost to the dominant Yankees. Their 1980 season made it all happen when they defeated the Royals four games to two for their first World Series title.

After losing the series in 1983 and 1993, the Phillies bagged their second crown in 2008 against the Rays.
6. The St. Louis Browns existed in the American League from 1902-1953. How many World Series titles did the Browns win in the team's history?

Answer: 0

The Browns were a pretty dismal team. They began their franchise in Milwaukee in the new American League in 1901, then moved to St. Louis in 1902 to become the Browns after finishing in last place. Their only World Series appearance was in 1944 in a loss to the Cardinals. The franchise moved to Baltimore in 1954 to become the Orioles.
7. The Milwaukee Brewers began their modern day franchise endeavors as the expansion team Seattle Pilots in 1969. After being run out of town after their first season and relocating to Milwaukee, the franchise made their first World Series appearance in which season?

Answer: 1982

The 1982 season found the Brewers in the playoffs for only the second time in the franchise's history. They lost the ALDS in 1981. They had the best record in the American League in 1982 with their 95-67 tally. They met the St. Louis Cardinals in the promised land, but lost four games to three.

The Cardinals' Darrell Porter was the series MVP. The Brewers' next playoff appearance was by playing in the National League in 2008, in a NLDS loss to the Phillies.
8. The Washington Senators were a new team and joined the new American League in 1901. Before the franchise moved to Minnesota to become the Twins in 1961, how many times did the Senators win the World Series?

Answer: 1

With the help of Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson, the Senators won their first World Series in their first appearance in 1924 against the New York Giants. They would keep their head of steam and make another appearance in the following season, but would lose to the Pirates. Their final appearance was in 1933, experiencing a four games to one loss to the Giants.
9. The New York Yankees defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2009 World Series. This was the ____ appearance by the Yankees in a World Series.

Answer: 40th

The Yankees have dominated Major League Baseball. Even after taking on the Yankee name in 1913, they would not see their first World Series until 1921. From 1921-1923, they met the New York Giants three consecutive times, and would finally win it in 1923. From the 1920s to the end of the century, the Yankees made a World Series appearance in each decade.
10. The Toronto Blue Jays made two World Series appearances in the 20th century, both resulting in crowns to the Canadian team. Which decade did they win these two World Series titles?

Answer: 1990s

The Blue Jays started their franchise in 1977 with manager Roy Hartsfield at the helm. Their first season saw them finish in last place with a 54-107 record. They would slowly turn it around and make it to the ALCS in 1985 under Bobby Cox, but lost to the Royals. Two more ALCS losses would lead them into the 1992 season, where they won their first World Series against the Atlanta Braves.

They would repeat in 1993 with a four games to two series crown over the Phillies.
