Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Perhaps one of the most genuinely gifted of players, this Irishman was born in 1946. He made his debut for Manchester United at the age of 17, and played 10 years at Old Trafford. Who is this Belfast genius?

Answer: George Best

Nicknamed 'El Beatle', Best was once labelled by Pele as the greatest player of all time. He totalled 466 games for United, scoring 178 goals in the process, none more famous than the one in the 1968 European Cup final, which United went on to win 4-1 against the Portuguese giants, Benfica.

In the same year, Best was named the youngest winner of the European Footballer of the Year trophy. He won 2 League titles, and 1 European Cup and won 37 international caps for Northern Ireland. After his United career was over, he played for a string of foreign clubs, and three more in England, namely Stockport County, Fulham and Bournemouth.
2. I was born on 20th December, 1937 in Sheffield, England. I started playing football from an early age, but outfield was not my chosen position. I was awarded the OBE in 1970, and made the 'Save of the Century' in the same year. Who am I?

Answer: Gordon Banks

Gordon Banks was without doubt the greatest goalkeeper in the world at his time. He joined Chesterfield in 1955, but two years National Service limited him to only 23 appearances, and in 1959 he signed for Leicester City. This is where he made his name and he won the League Cup with them in 1964. Banks' England debut came at Wembley Stadium, in a 2-1 defeat by Scotland in 1963, but three years later he held the World Cup aloft as England triumphed over West Germany, again at Wembley.

The 'Save of the Century' happened in the Mexico World Cup of 1970, when England played Brazil. Jairzinho crossed the ball for Pele to head downwards, and to the bottom left corner of the goal but somehow Banks managed to turn it around the post.

A transfer to Stoke gained him another League Cup, this time in 1972.

A car crash, and the loss of one eye ended Banks' career after 510 League games in 1972.
3. I was born February 18, 1967 in Caldogno, Italy. I began my playing career with Vicenza in 1983. I won the World Player of the Year award in 1993. I am perhaps most famous for missing a spot-kick in the 1994 World Cup Final. Who am I?

Answer: Roberto Baggio

Baggio played for Vicenza until 1985, when he signed for Fiorentina, but it wasn't until two years after when he signed for Juventus, where he really made his name. Moves to AC Milan, Bologna, Inter Milan and Brescia followed during his career. His penalty miss in the 1994 World Cup Final gave the Jules Rimet trophy to Brazil.
4. This former England international was born in Tipton, England on March 1965. He played for just three teams throughout his professional career, but became a living legend with one of those, which he signed for after making just 4 appearances in total for West Bromwich Albion between 1985-86. Who is he?

Answer: Steve Bull

'Bully' played for Wolverhampton Wanderers between 1986-99. Between those years, he made 562 appearances and scored a total of 306 goals in all competitions. Bull also played 13 times for England and scored 4 goals. After a couple of years out of the game, he returned for a short spell with Hereford United in 2001 before retiring from the game for good.
5. I was born in Karlsruhe, Germany on 1st May, 1968. I made my professional debut for Bayer Uerdingen in the 1986-97 Bungesliga season. I scored two goals for my country in the 1996 European Championships Final. Who am I?

Answer: Oliver Bierhoff

After two seasons with Uerdingen, Bierhoff moved to SV Hamburg and shortly after that, Borussia Monchengladbach. SV Saltzburg came in for him in the 1990-91 season and 23 goals earned him a transfer to Serie A with Ascoli. His most prominent spell in football came with Udinese where he scored 57 goals in 86 League games. Bierhoff scored 37 times for Germany in 70 games, but none more important than the 'Golden Goal' in the Euro '96 final against Czech Republic.
6. Born in Leytonstone, England in 1975, this midfielder started his career with Manchester United, and also played in 5 games for Preston North End. A dead-ball specialist who had already captained both club and country by the age of 25. Who is he?

Answer: David Beckham

On 1st November, 1996, Beckham played his first game for England against Moldova. Two years later, he was sent off from the field in disgrace during the 1998 World Cup match against Argentina, but four years later, he was captain during the 2002 World Cup of Japan & Korea. Probably the most spectacular goal of his career came in the first game of the 1996-97 season, when he scored against Wimbledon's Neil Sullivan from the half-way line.
7. This former Spanish international striker was born in Madrid on 22nd July, 1963. He started his career with Catilla, before becoming a legend with Real Madrid. For his goal poaching talent, he earned the nickname 'The Vulture'. Who is he?

8. This defender was born in Rotterdam, Holland in 1970. After making his professional debut for Excelsior in 1989, he hit the big time in Italy and Spain and then to London with Chelsea on a free transfer. Who is he?

Answer: Winston Bogarde

After leaving Excelsior in 1990, Bogarde signed for Sparta Rotterdam. 4 years, and 65 League games later he was on his way to Ajax of Amsterdam, where he played until 1997. AC Milan was next for the 1997-98 season, before signing for Barcelona. Bogarde made just 45 appearances for the Catalan giants before signing for Chelsea in 2000. Bogarde played in over 20 games for his country, Holland.
9. Born in Ales, France on 19th November, 1965, this tall, elegant defender started his career with Montpellier in 1983. He has been awarded the Legion d'Honneur, and is also a World Cup winner, even though he missed a final through suspension. Who is he?

Answer: Laurent Blanc

After playing with Montpellier between 1983-91, Blanc moved to Italy and Napoli for one season, before going back to France with Nimes. St. Etienne and Auxerre followed, before a transfer to Barcelona in 1996. After just one season, he arrived back in France with Marseilles where he excelled for two seasons, where Inter Milan saw his talent and snapped him up.

In August 2001, he signed for Manchester United, and retired from football in 2003 with an FA Premiership medal to his name.
10. This player was born on 15th October, 1969 in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. He made his debut for FC Porto in 1988, before signing for Barcelona later on, and back to Porto. Who is he?

Answer: Vitor Baia

Baia played for Porto between 1988-96 before moving to Barcelona. After a non-productive two seasons in Spain, he returned home. On 21st May, 2003, he won the UEFA Cup with Porto in a 3-2 extra-time victory over Glasgow Celtic in the final at the Estadio Olimpico, Seville, Spain.
