Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first World Series, held in 1903, pitted the AL Boston Americans against the NL Champion Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates were heavily favored but Boston won the best-of-nine games series 5-3. Which Boston pitcher won three games to help secure the first World Series crown?

Answer: Bill Dinneen

The others listed were all Pirate pitchers including Deacon Phillippe who won all the Pirates' three games and lost two. Dinneen threw 35 innings throughout four games and struck out 28 Pirates. His ERA was 2.06. With the Boston bat it was outfielder Chick Stahl who had 10 hits including three triples and batted .303 in the contest.
2. Which team was the first team to win three consecutive World Series?

Answer: New York Yankees

The Cubs won two in 1907 and 1908. The Athletics won two consecutive in 1910 and 1911. The Red Sox won two in 1915 and 1916. The Yankees showed their force by winning not only three, but four consecutive from 1936-1939. They defeated the Giants twice, and the Cubs and Reds once each.
3. Who was the first player in World Series history to hit five home runs during a series?

Answer: Reggie Jackson

The others all hit four. Ruth hit his four in 1926 and Gehrig got his in 1928. Snider of the Brooklyn Dodgers was the first in history to hit four home runs twice in 1952 and 1955, respectively. Jackson stood on top of the podium in 1977 with the Yankees against the Dodgers with five big ones including three in the final game six contest. Chase Utley duplicated Jackson's feat in 2009 with the Phillies in a four games to two loss to the Yankees.
4. Which season was the last that saw a best-of-nine game World Series?

Answer: 1921

There were only four series that were best-of-nine games. The first was in the first-ever World Series in 1903. Then Major League Baseball changed the format to best-of-seven games. They brought back the best-of-nine series in 1919, ironically with the Black Sox Scandal, then again in 1920 and 1921. A best-of-seven game series stuck after that.
5. This World Series was not controversial in itself, but a certain hand gesture was. One of the most famous gestures in baseball history happened in this 1932 World Series when Babe Ruth "called his shot" and then hit a home run. Or did he? This will never be validated in the history of baseball. Who were the Yankees playing in this World Series?

Answer: Chicago Cubs

It was game three against the Cubs with Chicago's Charlie Root on the mound. Was he gesturing to Root towards the outfield, or was the gesture made towards pitcher Guy Bush in the Cubs' dugout for something else? Nobody can ever say for fact. The game showed both Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth hitting two home runs in the game and winning 7-5. The Yankees swept the Cubs four games to none.
6. The new Baltimore Orioles franchise began with the new American League in 1901 as the Milwaukee Brewers. When did the franchise win its first World Series?

Answer: 1966

The franchise moved in 1902 to become the lowly St. Louis Browns who appeared in only one World Series in their team's existence, as the Browns, in 1944. They lost to their crosstown rival St. Louis Cardinals in that contest. The franchise moved to Baltimore in 1954 and experienced their first World Series Championship in 1966 against the Dodgers.

There was much controversy in that series brought on by Dodger pitcher Sandy Koufax, who refused to pitch in game one due to the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.

It threw the entire Los Angeles pitching rotation out of kilter and the Orioles won all it in four games.
7. Hall of Fame umpire Bill Klem provided his umpiring services for an amazing 37 seasons including 18 World Series between 1908-1940. Fortunately, he was not a part of the 1919 Black Sox Scandal World Series. What was Bill Klem's nickname?

Answer: Catfish

William Joseph "Catfish" Klem was born in 1874. His umpiring endeavors spanned 37 years. This was pretty amazing that his credibility brought him to officiate World Series contests in one-half of his career. He passed away in 1951 at the age of 77 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1953 along with fellow umpire Tom Connolly, the first umpires ever inducted into the Hall.
8. The 1976 World Series saw the Cincinnati Reds skunk the Yankees 4-0. It would be another 13 seasons before another team lost the World Series as a result of a skunking with zero games won. Which team was this that went home depressed?

Answer: San Francisco Giants

The 1989 World Series was named "The Earthquake Series" due to an earthquake hitting the bay area during the opening ceremonies of game three on October 17. The Athletics were ahead two games to none, then after a delay of 10 days, they picked up where they left off and pummeled the Giants for the remaining two games.

The Athletics outscored the Giants 32-14 in runs, and watched as pitcher Dave Stewart won the World Series MVP Award.
9. St. Louis Cardinal pitcher Bob Gibson set an amazing World Series record by striking out 31 opposing Yankee batters in the 1964 World Series. Who broke his single World Series record in the same decade?

Answer: He broke his own record

Gibson broke his own record in 1968 with 35 fanned against the powerful pitching team of the Detroit Tigers led by McLain and Lolich. Bob came close to his own record by striking out 26 Red Sox players in the 1967 series through 27 innings. Bob struck out 35 Tigers in the same 27 innings this time in 1968. Gibson received the World Series MVP Award for the 1964 and 1967 World Series, and won the Cy Young Award and NL MVP in 1968.

His tremendous career efforts brought him into the Hall of Fame in 1981.
10. The great Yogi Berra of the Yankees found himself playing in 75 World Series games in his career. Who was second in this category (WS games played in the 20th century) with 65 game appearances?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

While Yankee Yogi Berra appeared in 14 World Series, Mantle of the Yankees appeared in 12. Berra's World Series record from 1947-1963 was 10 wins against four losses. Mantle appeared in 12 from 1951-1964 going 7-5.
