Answer: Breakers

The Taipans are based in Cairns, the Blaze are based on the Gold Coast, and the Crocodiles are based in Townsville. Queensland is the only Australian state in the NBL to have three teams in the competition. They also don't have a team based in their capital city. Until 2008, the Brisbane Bullets competed in the NBL and were one of only two teams that had survived since the NBL's inception in 1979.
2. Which Queensland Rugby Union team share their name with a Rugby League team from another Australian state?

Answer: Reds

The Queensland Reds were formed in 1996 with the introduction of a Super 12 competition. Until 2005, they were one of only three Australian teams competing in the competition (alongside the Waratahs and Brumbies). They finished top of the ladder in 1996 and 1999 but never reached the Super 12 final.
3. In 1997 the Brisbane Bears merged with Fitzroy to become an AFL side with which animal as their mascot?

Answer: Lion

The Brisbane Bears were founded in 1986 as a result of the then VFL Commission needing to sell licences to help save several struggling Victorian clubs. Their original mascot was a koala. After a not-so-good 10 years in the newly named AFL, Brisbane merged with the Fitzroy Lions to create a much stronger, more financial club.
4. Which women's basketball team joined the WNBL competition as the sole representative of Queensland in the 2001/02 season?

Answer: Townsville Fire

The Townsville Fire missed the play-offs in their first season but made it to the preliminary finals in their second season after finishing second on the ladder.
Logan Thunder, also based in Queensland, joined the WNBL competition for the 2008/09 season.
Bendigo Spirit and the Bulleen Boomers are both based in Victoria.
5. By which fiery name are the Queensland women's hockey team known as?

Answer: Scorchers

The Queensland Scorchers have competed in the women's Australian Hockey League (AHL) since its inception in 1993 and won their first title in 1997. Their home ground is the Queensland State Hockey Centre.
Fire is the name of the women's cricket and one of the women's basketball teams competing in their respective national competitions.
6. The Firebirds are another fiery Queensland team. Which sport do they play?

Answer: Netball

The Queensland Firebirds joined the Commonwealth Trophy competition at its inception in 1997 and played all 11 seasons. Their best placing was 4th position, in 2007. The Firebirds joined the new ANZ Championship competition in 2008, along with a mix of teams from Australia and New Zealand.
7. There are three NRL teams based in Queensland. The Broncos are from Brisbane, the Cowboys from the north, but where are the Titans from?

Answer: Gold Coast

The Brisbane Broncos were the first club outside New South Wales to join in the NSWRL competition. Two years later, in 1988, the Tweed Heads Seagulls were granted a licence to join the NSWRL and became the Gold Coast Seagulls. In 1995 the Gold Coast Seagulls had their funding withdrawn due to poor performance and the Australian Rugby League took over and formed the Gold Coast Chargers.

The team was disbanded in 1998. From 2002-2005, trial matches were held on the Gold Coast and used as a measure to determine a new team entry into the NRL in 2005. Thus, the Gold Coast Titans were born and played their first game in February of 2007.
8. Which Taurean animal is the Queensland men's cricket team named for?

Answer: Bulls

The Queensland cricket team played their first game on 18th June 1864. They lost this game to the NSW team by 83 runs. They became the Bulls in the 1993/94 season and were the first team in Australian first-class cricket to be identified by a name other than their home state name.
9. Queensland Fire compete in the national competition of which women's sport?

Answer: Cricket

The Konica Minolta Queensland Fire compete in the Women's National Cricket League. All matches in the competition are one-day format, except for 2 twenty20 matches.
