Answer: New England Patriots

Just like in 2008, the Giants defeated the Patriots in the Super Bowl. They finished the regular season 9-7 with a week 17 win over the Dallas Cowboys to win the NFC Eastern division. They went on to beat the Atlanta Falcons, the Green Bay Packers, and the San Francisco 49ers on the way to the Super Bowl.

Answer: Johan Santana

Santana threw the first no-hitter in the 50-year history of the New York Mets, against the St. Louis Cardinals, as they won the game 8-0. He allowed five walks and struck out eight batters, including the Cardinals' third baseman David Freese to end the game.

He threw 134 pitches on the night. R.A. Dickey won 20 games on the season, and became the first Met to win the Cy Young Award since Dwight Gooden in 1985.

Phelps once again dominated in the pool, winnings six medals, four of them being gold medals. Franklin, Schmitt and Lochte all won five medals and tied for second in overall medals for the Olympics. Four of Franklin's medals were gold.
4. The lockout-shortened 2011-2012 NBA season was exciting nonetheless. Which team captured the title on June 21st?

Answer: Miami Heat

The Miami Heat won the finals, 4 games to 1, over the Oklahoma City Thunder. They finished with a record of 46 wins and 20 losses. Forward LeBron James was named the MVP of the finals, as well as MVP of the regular season.

7. On June 11th, this NHL team defeated the New Jersey Devils in the finals, 4 games to 2, to win their first-ever Stanley Cup. Which team was it?

Answer: Los Angeles Kings

After finishing the regular season as 8th place in the Western Conference, the Kings made a remarkable playoff run, winning 16 out of 20 games. Goaltender Jonathan Quick won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the 2012 playoffs, allowing only 1.41 goals per game.

On September 10th, Andy Murray won his first-ever major, the U.S. Open. He had previously lost four championship matches, three to Roger Federer and one to Novak Djokovich. Coincidentally, he faced Federer in both the finals at Wimbledon and the Olympics. (The Olympic tennis venue was The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club at Wimbledon also). Murray also won a silver medal at the Olympics, in the mixed doubles event.

Kentucky won the national championship over Kansas by the score of 67-59. Anthony Davis led the team by shooting 63.2% and scoring 14.2 points per game. He was named AP Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament. He also was on the team USA roster for the 2012 Olympics, and drafted first overall by the New Orleans Hornets on June 28th.

I'll Have Another, jockeyed by Mario Gutierrez was a 12-1 underdog in the Kentucky Derby, but in the Preakness, his odds were 5-2. Bodemeister finished second in both the Derby and the Preakness. I'll Have Another's opening line odds for the Belmont were 4-5 before he was forced to pull out. Union Rags won the Belmont on June 9th.
