1. The MacRobertson International Shield is a trophy competed for in which sport?

Answer: Croquet

The Shield was first competed for between England and Australia in 1925, with New Zealand joining in 1963. In 1979, Great Britain replaced England, with the USA becoming the fourth contender in 1993. The competition is staged every third or fourth year, with the four competing nations taking it in turn to host the event.
2. Which cyclist won the Tour de France in both 2007 and 2009?

Answer: Alberto Contador

Nicknamed "El Pistolero", Contador was born near Madrid in 1982. He won the 2007 Tour, but was unable to defend his yellow jersey in 2008 after his team, Astana, were banned from the event. He did win both the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana that year, before reclaiming his Tour de France title in 2009.
3. Which 2010 NHL franchise was formerly known as the Hartford Whalers?

Answer: Carolina Hurricanes

The Hurricanes were originally a WHA team based in Boston, called the New England Whalers. They later joined the NHL as the Hartford Whalers, before relocating to Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1997. As the Carolina Hurricanes, they won their first Stanley Cup in franchise history in 2005-06, defeating the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in the finals.
4. Sports teams from Central Michigan University are known by what nickname?

Answer: Chippewas

Based in Mount Pleasant, Central Michigan is a member of the Mid-American Conference. The school was known as the Bearcats until 1942, when they adopted the name of a local Native-American tribe. The school's football team recorded their first-ever bowl game victory in 2006 when they defeated Middle Tennessee in the Motor City Bowl.
5. Which was the first British team to win soccer's European Champions Cup?

Answer: Celtic

In 1967, Celtic, champions of Scotland, defeated Inter Milan 2-1 in Lisbon to become the first British team to lift the Champions Cup. The team, managed by Jock Stein, have since been known as the "Lisbon Lions". The crucial goals that day were netted by Tommy Gemmell and Steve Chalmers.
6. The World Cup of Golf has been competed for since 1953, but what name was it known by until 1966?

Answer: Canada Cup

The Canada Cup was the brainchild of John Jay Hopkins, chairman of Canadair, with the first two editions being held in Montreal. The name of the tournament was changed to the World Cup in 1967. Played in various locations around the world up until 2006, the tournament was renamed the Omega Mission Hills World Cup in 2007, with all editions from 2007-09 held in China.
7. Which baseball legend was nicknamed the "Georgia Peach"?

Answer: Ty Cobb

Tyrus Cobb was born in Narrows, Georgia, in 1886. He made his Major League debut for the Detroit Tigers in 1905. Cobb set a career batting average of .366 which was never overtaken in the 20th century. He was part of the first class inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1936, topping the ballot.
8. What type of billiards is played on a table with no pockets?

Answer: Carom Billiards

Carom Billiards is thought to have been invented in France in the 18th century. As in English billiards, three balls are used, one red and two white. In the Carom version, all scoring is done by cannons, i.e. striking your cue ball against both the red ball and your opponents cue ball with one stroke.
9. Which NFL team was undefeated in both the 1922 and 1923 seasons?

Answer: Canton Bulldogs

The Canton Bulldogs were founded in 1905, and their early days were spent playing in the Ohio League. They joined the new American Professional Football Association (later renamed the National Football League) in 1920, and quickly established themselves as a league powerhouse.

In 1922-23, they played 24 games, winning 21 and tying three, being named league champions on both occasions. The club was moved to Cleveland for the 1924 season, where they again won the title, before returning to Canton for two unsuccessful seasons.

The club folded after the 1926 season.
10. Which gymnast was the first to score a "perfect 10" in Olympic competition?

Answer: Nadia Comaneci

Comaneci, from Romania, was awarded a perfect 10.0 for her uneven bars routine at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. This was the first time a perfect 10.0 had ever been awarded in modern Olympic history. The 14-year old went on to receive another six perfect scores during the games, winning gold in the beam, uneven bars and all-round events.

In 1980, in Moscow, she added gold medals in the beam and floor disciplines.
