Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At what sporting event was the following phrase uttered: "Do you believe in miracles? Yes!"?

Answer: 1980 Winter Olympics - USA Olympic hockey team defeats the Soviet Union

Although the other three were miraculous in their own right, it was the Lake Placid hockey win that still reigns as the greatest upset in sports history. Legendary sports announcer Al Michaels provided us with those classic words. Members of the team were impressed in the aftermath by the American fans who said, "WE beat the Soviets".

They didn't play but they felt it their victory as well.
2. What classic baseball announcer gave us the following: "I don't believe what I just saw"?

Answer: Jack Buck

Jack, the father of baseball announcer Joe Buck was broadcasting the 1988 World Series between the Dodgers and the Athletics along with legendary announcer Vin Scully. Playing for the Dodgers was former Detroit Tiger slugger Kirk Gibson. Gibson wasn't going to be used by manager Tommy Lasorda since he had a bad left hamstring and a swoolen right knee both which he suffered in the NLCS.

But the opportunity presented itself when Gibson was called in as a pinch hitter. After wobbling to the plate, Gibson hit a walk off homerun off of Dennis Eckersley and while rounding second base he pumped his arms and Buck spoke what we were all thinking.
3. In 2006 during an after game press conference, then Dallas Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells was being bombarded with questions about a certain Cowboy player to which Parcells responded: "We are not gonna discuss... the player". To whom was he referring to?

Answer: Terrell Owens

Everywhere Terrell Owens went he created contraversy with his ego as well as his mouth and Dallas was no exception. Parcells was one guy who would take no guff from him and it made for some interesting press conferences.
4. "We sittin' in here, I'm supposed to be the franchise player, and we in here talkin' about practice. I mean listen, we talkin bout practice. Not a game, not a game, not a game. We talkin bout practice." What NBA great gave us this famous ranting?

Answer: Allen Iverson

Iverson's press conference came after he failed to show up at the 76ers practice, where he played from 1996 to 2006. I guess he wanted to let people know that because he was a star, he didn't need practice. Well in the entire ranting he used the word "practice" 24 times.
5. What former Dallas Cowboys head coach gave us the following quote: "The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra"?

Answer: Jimmy Johnson

There was no record found as to when Johnson made the quote but it was probably during his stint in Dallas during one of the Super Bowl seasons 1992-1993.
6. "Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport ... the thrill of victory ... and the agony of defeat ... the human drama of athletic competition. This is ABC's Wide World of Sports!" What legendary sports figure gave that introduction every week?

Answer: Jim McKay

The sports weekly TV show ran from 1961 to 1998 with McKay as the host. The show produced some of the most memorable sports moments around the world. McKay died June 7, 2008.
7. This Hall of Fame baseball player gave us some of the most memorable quotes ever such as, "It ain't over till its over", "The future ain't what it used to be" and "It's deja vu all over again". Who was this legendary star?

Answer: Yogi Berra

Yogi Berra was so good with the quotes because many of them made people stop and say...what?? When asked what time it was he replied, "you mean now?".
" You can observe a lot by watching ". He was even used in one of the AFLAC duck commercials. While describing how AFLAC can save you money on insurance, he said, "If you get hurt and miss work, it doesn't hurt to miss work. And they give you cash which is as good as money". Thank you Yogi!
8. In 1951, what sports announcer shouted out, "The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!"?

Answer: Russ Hodges

The occasion was the 1951 National League Championship Series between the old New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers (now SF Giants and LA Dodgers). Bobby Thomson's walk off homerun (dubbed as the "shot heard around the world") gave the Giants the win and the call by Hodges became even more memorable than the play.
9. On November 20, 1982 a college football announcer by the name of Joe Starkey gave us one of the most memorable calls during what was called simply, "The Play". The play involved several laterals and a marching band on the field. What two Pac-10 teams were involved in this strange play?

Answer: California - Stanford

Starkey's call was memorable while we watched. "Oh, the band is on the field! He's gonna go into the end zone! He's gone into the end zone! ... The most amazing, sensational, dramatic, heart-rending, exciting, thrilling finish in the history of college football!" Stanford had just scored a FG to take a 20-19 lead with only four seconds left. Cal knew their only chance to win was with a kickoff return.

The ball was lateraled around several times as the Stanford band began marching onto the field. The final player who took a lateral ran in between and even over several band members into the end zone for the winning TD.
10. On March 3, 1993 a famous sports figure who was dying of cancer gave an emotional speech at the ESPY awards in which he stated, "Never give up! Failure and rejection are only the first step to succeeding." He died less than two months later. Who was this famous sports legend?

Answer: Jim Valvano

It was one of the most emotional moments in sports television history as Valvano, who needed to be helped up on the stage by friend Dick Vitale, admonished everyone to do just three things everyday ... laugh, think and cry. If you do that then you will be special.

He died a month later n April 28, 1993. Jim Valvano first received recognition as coach of NC State who, against huge odds, won the 1983 NCAA Tournament. One of the most memorable video moments was after the title game win over Houston where Valvano is running all over the court looking for someone to hug.
