Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following Cardinals hit four home runs in one game?

Answer: Mark Whiten

"Hard-Hittin'" Whiten played for the Blue Jays, Indians, Red Sox, Phillies, Atlanta Braves, Mariners, and Yankees. Other players that have hit 4 jacks in a game include Bob Horner, Mike Cameron, Shawn Green, and Carlos Delgado. Whiten was the only player to do it in the 1990s.
2. On August 10, 2003, in the fifth inning, the Cardinals were retired in what way by the Atlanta Braves?

Answer: Unassisted Triple Play

Rafael Furcal was only the 13th person to accomplish this feat as he caught the line drive, tagged second for the force out and tagged the runner. The most common way to accomplish this is to have two men on and be engaging in a double steal, while the batter hits a sharp line drive to a middle infielder. Two first basemen have done it, but only playing in the unorthodox formation they used to at the beginning of the 1900s.
3. Which Cardinal hit for the cycle in the 2005 season?

Answer: Mark Grudzielanek

Grudzielanek is one of three Cardinals to hit for the cycle at the former Busch Memorial Stadium, along with Lou Brock and Ray Lankford. John Mabry hit for the natural cycle, in 1995, which means he got the four requirements in the order of single, double, triple, HR.
4. Which two Cardinals position players pitched for the Redbirds in the 2007 season?

Answer: Aaron Miles and Scott Speizio

Miles is a second baseman who has spent some time at shortstop and third base, and Speizio came up as a second baseman but has spent significant time at 1B, and some time at 3B, LF, and RF also.
5. The Cardinals tied a MLB record on August 6, 2007, of how many consecutive hits in official at-bats.

Answer: 10

Oddly enough, that record is held by more than 10 teams over the years, yet no one had gotten that elusive 11th hit. The Cardinals have done this twice in their past, doing it in 1920 and 1922. On August 6, they scored 9 runs before recording their first out. It was the only inning that they scored during that game, which was against the Padres at Busch.
6. Which pitcher was traded, along with Bobby Shantz, to the Chicago Cubs for Lou Brock?

Answer: Ernie Broglio

Both Shantz and Broglio were 20-game winners, although their careers declined on their arrival in Chicago, whereas Lou Brock's career took a Hall of Fame turn.
7. This was the only Cardinal to win the NL MVP award in the 1980s.

Answer: Willie McGee

In 1985, McGee ranked 1st in the National League in batting average (.353, the highest mark by a switch-hitter in League history), hits (216), and triples (18). He also ranked 3rd in the National League in runs scored (114) and stolen bases (56). Additionally, he earned a Gold Glove Award, a Silver Slugger Award and was voted to the National League All-Star team.
8. Who hit the most home runs at the old Busch Stadium (demolished in 2005)?

Answer: Ray Lankford

Jim Edmonds chased it in the closing games at Busch in 2005, but came up just a few shy of Lankford. Lankford played 1,580 games over 12 seasons with the Cardinals. A fan favorite, Lankford was 8th in Cardinal history in runs (928), 14th in hits (1,479), 5th in HRs (228), and 9th in RBIs (829) in 2007.
9. Which career category does Stan Musial NOT lead the Cardinals in?

Answer: Batting Average

Musial's .331 average in 12,712 plate appearances was 5th all time behind these greats: 1. Rogers Hornsby .359 6714, 2. Tip O'Neill .343 3519, 3. Johnny Mize .336 3582, and 4. Joe Medwick .335 5056.
10. We all know Fernando Tatis hit two grand slams in one inning. Who was the pitcher?

Answer: Chan Ho Park

It happened on April 13, 1999. Tatis hit 34 HRs in 1999, which is unusual because his season high other than that year is 18. Interestingly, on March 23rd, 2007, Tatis was assigned by to the New York Mets AAA team, the New Orleans Zephyrs, where he became teammates with Chan Ho Park.
