Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2005, the Chicago White Sox won their first World Series since 1917. Who did they defeat?

Answer: Houston Astros

The White Sox didn't just defeat them, they deflated them four games to none. Jermaine Dye won the series MVP for his .438 batting average.
2. Which Hall of Fame player had the number 27 and 72 retired in his honor?

Answer: Carlton Fisk

Fisk played 11 seasons with the Red Sox and 13 with the White Sox from 1969-1993. The number 27 was retired by the Red Sox, and the number 72 by the White Sox. The hall took him in 2000.
3. Who was the first pitcher in the 21st Century to win three World Series games in a single World Series?

Answer: Randy Johnson

Johnson was an Arizona Diamondback in 2001 while facing the New York Yankees. Randy won game two, six, and seven to join an elite group of pitchers to win three games in a single World Series. The last pitcher in the 20th Century to win three was Mickey Lolich of the Tigers in 1968 against the Cardinals.
4. Which of the following Hall of Famers hit only one career home run off the great Sandy Koufax?

Answer: Willie McCovey

McCovey of the Giants had problems with the pitches of Koufax. He also had the lowest batting average of the four listed, batting only .143 against him. Both Aaron and Banks led this group with seven home runs each off Sandy.
5. Who was the first player in postseason history to hit two walk-off home runs in different series that was a game-winner?

Answer: Bernie Williams

Both occurrences for Williams were in the ALCS, and both in game one. His first was in 1996 at the end of game one in Baltimore. Randy Myers dished up the pitch. Bernie's second was in the 1999 ALCS against the Red Sox and pitcher Rod Beck in the 10th inning. The Yankees would go on to win both World Series.
6. Mark Reynolds of the Diamondbacks was the first player in history to strikeout 200 times in a season when he struck out 204 times in 2008. Who was next player to surpass this 200-mark in a season?

Answer: Mark Reynolds

Reynolds broke his own record of 204 when he struck out 223 times in 2009, which equated to a strikeout every 2.6 plate appearances.
7. Manager Joe McCarthy was with the Yankees in 16 loyal seasons, taking the team to eight American League pennants. In which year did he defect to the Boston Red Sox?

Answer: 1948

After managing the Cubs for five seasons, McCarthy took the reins of the Yankees in 1931. Of his eight AL pennants, the Yankees would win seven World Series. He quit the Yankees in early 1946 because General Manager Lee McPhail wanted to run the team and interfered with McCarthy too much. His new managing job was in 1948 with the Red Sox.
8. Which pitcher, although never throwing a no-hitter in his career, threw four one-hitters in one season?

Answer: Pete Alexander

Grover Cleveland 'Pete' Alexander played his first seven seasons with the Phillies from 1911-1917. He threw four one-hitters in the 1915 season, and finished the season with the Triple Crown Award. He threw two more Triple Crowns in 1916 and 1920. Amazingly, Pete finished third only once in the MVP voting, and was never again voted higher than 10th.
9. Which of these sluggers hit over 500 home runs in their career?

Answer: Gary Sheffield

Sheffield retired in 2009 after hitting 10 home runs for the Mets and retiring with 509. If not for a four-game suspension at the end of the 2008 season, Gary might have reached the 500-mark earlier. Both Gehrig and McGriff hit 493 home runs, and Stargell retired with 475.
10. In a head-to-head matchup, which of the following sluggers had a career .000 batting average against Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan?

Answer: Frank Thomas

Thomas only faced Ryan 14 times in his career. Nolan walked him twice which gave Thomas 12 official at-bats. Of those 12, Ryan struck out Thomas 11 times. Frank's only fair-territory hit of the ball was a pop-out.
