Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many moves does Chon-Ji have?

Answer: 19

The next pattern (Dan Gun) has 21.
2. In brief, what does Chon-Ji mean?

Answer: Heaven and the Earth

Chon-Ji means the heaven and the Earth: it is in the orient interpretated as the creation of the world or beginning of human history therefore it is the initial pattern played by the beginner. This pattern has two parts, one to represent the heaven and the other the earth.
3. What is Side Kick in Korean?

Answer: Yop Chagi

It's hard telling the difference between Side Kick and Turning Kick (the move that is) at an early stage in your TKD training.
4. What is Ap Chabusgi in English?

Answer: Front snap kick

The best way to memorise words is to say the Korean and English word of the move over and over again, I usually say it forty times myself. For example: I'd say "Front Snap Kick, Ap Chabusgi," forty times non-stop. It may sound mad but trust me, it works!
5. What is three-step sparring?

Answer: Sambo Matsoki

In the T.A.G.B we don't do three-step sparring until we are grading for our green stripe ( That was only a few months ago when it got changed, it used to be yellow belt) but for some reason, we have still to know this when we grade for our yellow belt.
6. What is Low Block in Korean Note: when I was asked this question, I was asked what's low outer forearm block. It is actually the same thing (the examiners like to catch you out).

Answer: Najunde bakat polmok makgi

Be careful with this one, I lost marks because of it.
7. What is Knifehand Strike in Korean?

Answer: Sonkal taerigi

When you become a yellow belt you will use Knifehand Strike and Knifehand guarding block in patter Dan Gun.
8. What does Ap Kumchi mean?

Answer: Ball of the foot

Always make sure you revise all of the words from your last grading as well as your next, you never know when you might get asked an old one.
9. What is Palmok Deabi Makgi in English?

Answer: Forearm guarding block

If your Tae Kwon Do teacher does not supply you with any revision sheets or sell them then you should ask him/her where can get one from (really he/she should give them or sell them to you).
10. What is Sitting Stance in Korean?

Answer: Annun sogi

This one stays with right up until you you are a Green Stripe, but that doesn't mean you should forget what it means.
11. What is Backfist in Korean?

Answer: Dung joomuk

If you ever have any problems pronouncing anything, you really should ask your Tae Kwon Do teacher how to pronounce it. If you don't you could lose a mark when you get asked a move that is hard to pronounce and say it wrong.
12. Which is Niunja Sogi in English?

Answer: L-stance

This move can be a pain when you are practising your pattern in the Tae Kwon Do teacher's time because your leg you are leaning on can really start to ache after a while!
13. What does Chookyo Makgi mean?

Answer: Raising block

This move can be combined with a low block (Low Block-Raising Block), you will probably this move in you grading.
14. After answering each question in your examination, what do you shout out (this is essential)?

Answer: Sir/Miss!

This doesn't sound important but believe me it is. If you don't you will lose effort marks.
15. What must you do after each question, when you come up to the table and leave the table (this is also important)?

Answer: Bow and go back into chumbi.

Whenever I have done my gradings not many people actually do this, instead they have their hands behind their back. Never do that, always bow (while you are shouting Sir/Miss!) and go back into Chumbi position.
