The South Melbourne Football Club was born on 15th July 1874. They started playing their home games at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 1982. The Swans set a record for Brownlow Medals in 2006, with 13 medals won by 11 players.

New South Wales Blues were one of the first three teams to join the competition in the 1892-93 season, and have finished the competition in first place 45 times since its inception, a whopping 18 times more than the Victorian Bushrangers (second on the list of total season wins). The Wollongong Hawks entered the NBL as the Illawarra Hawks in 1979, being one of ten foundation clubs. They changed their name to the Wollongong Hawks in 1998 along with a move to a new stadium. In 2001, the Wollongong Hawks became the first NSW-based team to win the NBA title.

They were nearly disbanded in 2009 except for a 'Save the Hawks' campaign which enabled the club to stay in the national competition. The Falcons were disbanded in 1999, the Sydney Kings in 2008, and West Sydney Razorbacks in 2009 (they renamed themselves Sydney Spirit in 2008 when The Kings folded).
