Jenson Button passed Juan Pablo Montoya into turn one at the start of the season in Bahrain. A good overtaking move, to move up into fourth position.

Felipe Massa came home in fifth with Schumi taking sixth behind him. In the dying laps, the pair were scrambling over fifth position. Massa came out on top though.

Imola 2006 was Michael Schumacher's 85th Grand Prix victory. His first win was at Spa Francorchamps in 1992 with Benetton.

A sad retirement for Schumacher Jnr who was hoping to score a heap of points. Huge amounts of black smoke poured out of the exhaust pipes of his Toyota because of an engine failure on lap 53. Juan Pablo Montoya retired the same lap with the same problem.

There were only 60 laps to complete so that made it so much more disappointing as it was near the end. Same situation with Juan Pablo Montoya.

Answer: Fifth

Monaco qualifying saw Schumacher take pole, but then Alonso put in a better first and middle sector than he did, and smashed Michael's time. Schumacher then parked up, blocking the track. As a result Fernando settled for second, but later moved to pole, when the Ferrari was sent to the back of the grid, in a penalty brought on by Schumacher's actions.

The GP was tough, but Schumacher had 78 laps to pull through the pack, and scored four points finishing in fifth.

Answer: Raikkonen slipped on the marbles

The second to last corner on the Canadian track is a fairly tight hairpin. Around the side of the track a mixture of dust and dirt etc. collects, and these are called marbles. Kimi Raikkonen was running second until he slipped on the marbles and Schumacher was able to step up a place on the podium.

Mark Webber, Franck Montagny and Christian Klien all collided going into the first corner, then Kimi Raikkonen, Juan Pablo Montoya, Nick Heidfeld and Scott Speed retired in turn two. It appeared that Montoya drove into the back of Kimi Raikkonen, who spun round and clipped Button, who went wide into Heidfeld and caused him to flip. Scott Speed was caught up somewhere in the middle of all that. Jenson Button retired on lap three, due to low water pressure because of the crash damage.

This would be Montoya's last F1 GP before moving to NASCAR. Albers, Montiero, Sato, Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher would all retire from the Grand Prix later on, while Nico Rosberg was the only car to finish without a point, and Vitantonio Liuzzi got his second ever career point finishing in eighth.

Alonso had a 25 point advantage in the championship after Canada. Michael Schumacher won at Indianapolis with Alonso taking fifth. That lowered the gap to 19 points. Schumacher won at Magny Cours, and Alonso took second, lowering the gap down to 17 points.

Alonso came into the pits on lap 51, and changed to dry tyres. When he exited the pitlane, his car swerved out of control and he retired. At first, it was thought to be right-rear wheel problem of some sort, but after some examination by the Renault team, it was found that the drive shaft had snapped. This was the reason he swerved out of control.

The two Ferraris and Alonso all came into refuel on lap 14, but because Ferrari brought both cars into the pits at the same time, Schumacher had to queue up behind Massa to wait for his stop. This gave crucial time away to Fernando Alonso.

Kubica stunned everybody by getting his first career podium, only two races after making his F1 racing debut. Kubica replaced Jacques Villeneuve at Hungary, from a test driver role, then recorded his first ever podium finish at Monza.

The French GP of 2000 saw Schumacher have an engine failure. The next time he would have another one would be the penultimate race of his career, where he and his fans worldwide were hoping for a victory and an eighth career title. Schumacher was now ten points down with one more race to go. He needed to win at Brazil, with Alonso finshing without points or retiring.

Massa won his second career victory, in his home town of Sao Paulo, Brazil. He became the first Brazilian to win on home soil since 1993, when the late Ayrton Senna won at Interlagos.

Answer: Jacques Villeneuve

Felipe Massa was moved from Sauber to Ferrari in 2006, after outpacing his teammate, former world champion Jacques Villeneuve in 2005. He had already been at Ferrari in 2003 as a test driver but moved back to Sauber for 2004 and 2005. He signed with Ferrari again for 2006, and then got his first two Grand Prix victories from his first two poles with them.

Michael Schumacher was told to make his decision as to whether to retire or stay with Ferrari after 2006, they kept asking him, and then they told Schumi that he MUST make up his mind after the Monza GP. He concluded in a press conference that he would retire after the Brazilian GP at the close of the 2006 season. He had actually been thinking about retirement since early 2003! His fans that attended the Monza GP with high hopes of another season with Schumacher, were in tears. Even the grown men!
