Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first game of the 2014 season was played in which location?

Answer: Australia

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks opened the season with two games in Sydney, Australia, with the Dodgers winning both games. The four prior seasons were opened in Japan, and one each in Mexico and Puerto Rico, as MLB seeked to broaden its appeal to a worldwide audience.
2. MLB instituted a major rules change for 2014 when it adopted an instant replay system. Under this system, how many challenges can a manager make in a game?

Answer: two, if the first challenge is successful

If the first challenge is successful, then a manager is permitted a second challenge in that game. This is slightly different than the NFL challenge system, in which teams are permitted two challenges automatically, and a third if the first two are successful. In both sports, game officials are permitted to institute reviews late in the game, at their discretion.
3. Which of the following plays would NOT be reviewable under the instant replay system instituted by MLB in 2014?

Answer: balks

The approach taken by the rule change is to list all plays that are reviewable, and any play not on the list is not subject to review. Balks are not on the list.
4. MLB instituted a rules change for 2014, designed to prevent injuries from which event?

Answer: collisions at home plate

Prior to 2014, catchers were permitted to block the plate, even if the throw into home had not arrived yet, and runners were permitted to crash into the catcher, in lieu of sliding. This sometimes resulted in serious injuries, such as Giants' catcher Buster Posey's season-ending injury in 2011.

MLB finally corrected this problem prior to the 2014 season, bringing its rules in line with those already in use in amateur baseball. The catcher cannot block the plate unless he has the ball, and the runner cannot leave the baseline to initiate a collision with the catcher.

It should be noted that the written rule has always stated that a fielder cannot block a runner's base path unless he has the ball or is making a play on a ball. However, the umpires had developed an unwritten "common law" rule to allow this in the case of catchers at home plate.
5. Which league won the 2014 All-Star game, for its 20th win in 27 years?

Answer: American League

The history of the All-Star competition between the two leagues is fascinating. The All-Star game was first played in 1933, and the AL won 12 of the first 16 games. The NL then began to catch up starting in 1950, and won 33 of the next 43 games, with one tie.

Then in 1988 the AL started its second period of dominance by winning 20 games to 6, with one tie. Starting in 2003 the All-Star game has determined home field advantage for the World Series, with the AL winning 9 of the first 12 games under this new system.
6. The Giants and the Royals met in the 2014 World Series, with both teams qualifying for the postseason as wild card teams. Was this the first time two wild card teams faced each other in a World Series?

Answer: No

The Giants and Angels qualified for the 2002 World Series as wild card teams, with the Angels prevailing in seven games after coming from five runs down to win game six.
7. 2014 was the last season for Bud Selig to serve as Commissioner. Who did the owners select to replace him?

Answer: Rob Manfred

Rob Manfred, a lawyer, first got involved with MLB as its representative in labor negotiations with the players association. He had worked full-time for MLB since 1998. One of Manfred's first major actions was to institute new rules designed to speed up the pace of the game.
8. Three of the following AL teams won at least 90 games in 2014 and finished first in their respective divisions. Which team is the exception?

Answer: New York Yankees

The Yankees finished second in the AL East with 84 wins, but failed to make the playoffs.
9. Three of the following NL teams won at least 90 games in 2014 and finished first in their respective divisions. Which team is the exception?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

The Braves tied with the Mets for second in the NL East with 79 wins, but failed to make the playoffs.
10. Which LA Angels of Anaheim player set career milestones in 2014 with his 1,500th RBI, his 2,500th career hit, and his 500th career home run?

Answer: Albert Pujols

Since moving from the Cardinals to the Angels following the 2011 season, Pujols' offensive production has been low by his standards, but he has still been a very good player.
