Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. By what margin did St Kilda defeat reigning premiers Carlton in the preseason Grand Final?

Answer: 56 points

In an upset win, St Kilda won its first flag since 1966 and only their second night premiership. Ironically, this was the same margin the Saints had beaten the Blues by the last time the two teams had met in Round 9 1995. It was one of only two losses for Carlton that year.
2. In the opening week of the season proper, eventual Grand Finalists Sydney suffered the second biggest loss of the round. Which club humiliated them by 90 points?

Answer: Adelaide

The following week, the Swans would lose on their own turf to Fremantle, but then went on to win 12 of their next 14 matches. The only loss was to West Coast in Round 8 by 36 points, while the other disappointment was a come-from-behind draw against Essendon in Round 6.
3. In Round 2, eventual Premiers North Melbourne recorded a massive win at the MCG. Who was the club they defeated by 131 points?

Answer: Footscray

Footscray, who were later known as the Western Bulldogs were beaten 5.7.37 to 26.12.168, and went straight to the bottom of the ladder. The year didn't get much better for the Bulldogs finishing with just five and half wins from 22 matches.
4. Which club brought Carlton's 18-game winning streak to an end in Round 3?

Answer: Fremantle

Carlton, struck with injuries, had to travel to Perth for the game and was trounced by second-season club Fremantle to the tune of 53 points. Coach Gerard Neesham called this their greatest victory.
5. In Round 10, Melbourne ruckman Jim Stynes broke the record for the most consecutive games played. What was the number he reached?

Answer: 205

The 1991 Brownlow Medalist eclipsed the previous record which had stood since 1943. This honour was held by Richmond's Jack Titus who played 204 games without a miss beginning in 1926.
6. In Round 10 in the match between St Kilda and Essendon, a bizarre event occurred. What was it?

Answer: The light towers failed

With less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter and the score at Essendon 9.9.63 versus St Kilda 6.7.43, a piece of high-voltage equipment inside Waverley Park failed, triggering a blackout. The AFL belatedly informed both teams that the game had been abandoned and a meeting was held the following day.

It was decided the match would be concluded the following Tuesday in two 12-minute halves and would allow both teams to use any player on the list. As a result, the match involved a record number of players, with Essendon using 26 while St Kilda used one fewer.

The Bombers went on to win by 22 points in front of 17,590 people, compared to 42,000 on the Saturday.
7. Which of the following clubs was not involved in a failed merger in 1996?

Answer: Collingwood

Poor on-field performances from Melbourne combined with Hawthorn's dire financial position meant that a merger was likely. Melbourne members voted slightly in favour of the merger, however, Hawthorn members were strongly opposed. Furthermore the hope of a merger was dashed when former Hawthorn player Don Scott was able to raise enough money to eventually eliminate Hawthorn's debt while entrepreneur Joseph Gutnick pledged money in assistance to the Demons. North Melbourne was tipped to merge with embattled Fitzroy, but the AFL had other ideas when Brisbane made a bid to merge and the amalgamation went ahead with the entry of the Brisbane Lions into the competition in 1997.
8. Which of these players did not retire upon the conclusion of the 1996 home and away season?

Answer: Stephen Kernahan

The Carlton champion nicknamed "Sticks", who originally came from South Australia continued to play on for another season with Carlton, where he had been since 1986 and had captained since 1987. Kernahan's last game was against Richmond in Round 22 1997.
9. How many goals did Sydney's Tony "Plugger" Lockett kick in the Grand Final against North Melbourne?

Answer: 6

Lockett was on fire early in the match, kicking three goals in the first quarter. However, after halftime his influence was largely nullified by veteran North Melbourne fullback Mick Martyn.
10. The 1996 Brownlow Medal would have been won by three players, had it not been for the fact that one of the highest polling players was ineligible due to suspension. Who was he?

Answer: Corey McKernan

McKernan had been outed for one match for kneeing Geelong's John Barnes in Round 6 and thus did not share the honours with Brisbane's Michael Voss and Essendon's James Hird. This was the first time such an event had occurred and ironically the following year, the outright highest polling player would also be ineligible because of suspension, that being Chris Grant.
