Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When seated in a shell, port side would be on your right.

Answer: True

Port is on your right, starboard on the left. Of course, the opposite is true when you are not seated in the shell.
2. Which of the following types of shell are not raced competitively?

Answer: Six man shell

Eights, fours, pairs, and singles, are the only categories of boats generally raced. Eights are almost always with coxswain, Fours can be with cox or without, or as a quad (each rower has 2 oars). Pairs can be coxed, without cox, or as a double (2 oars per rower), and the single is rowed without cox, and the sculler has 2 oars.
3. What are the duties of a coxswain during a race?

Answer: Steers the shell, calls the race, and makes corrections

The coxswain is supposed to steer, and make calls during the race to help his/her boat win.
4. What is the usual distance for a race?

Answer: 2000 meters

Most collegiate, club, and international sprint races, are 2000 meters. Some high school sprints are 1500 meters long.
5. What is the command for stopping a certain behavior?

Answer: Weigh enough

Some very dedicated (or crazy) coxswains say this, even when not in a rowing environment. It's pretty bizarre.
6. Where do the largest rowers typically sit in the boat?

Answer: The middle

The largest and strongest rowers, typically are placed in the middle seats, such as 6, 5, and 4, in an eight to improve boat balance. This "engine room" provides much of the power for the boat.
7. What type of indoor practice equipment, is usually used most often by rowers to train during the offseason?

Answer: Ergometer

Ergometers are indoor rowing machines. "Ergometer" is Greek for "Work meter". Just ask a rower about an ergometer some time and watch their response.
8. Which of the following stroke ratings (strokes per minute), would be effective for a sprint race?

Answer: 35 spm

A sprint race is usually rowed anywhere from 30-40 strokes per minute, depending on the crew. A head race is often rowed slightly lower because it is longer. As a heavyweight, I would love to be able to race at 16 spm, but it is impossible to win like that.
9. What is the function of the stroke of a boat?

Answer: Set the tempo and stroke rate for the rest of the boat

The stroke must set the tempo of the boat and determine how fast strokes are taken. It is the most important and most difficult seat to row.
10. What is a "settle" during a race?

Answer: Lowering the stroke rating after a sprint/start

A settle is perhaps the most important part of a race. It is designed to lower the stroke rating, after a sprint or the high strokes taken at the beginning of a race. It allows the boat to apply constant power at a more manageable cadence.
