The original seven members of the Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives were Chicago, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue, and Wisconsin. Indiana and Iowa joined in 1899, and Ohio State was admitted in 1912. Chicago dropped out of the conference, but was eventually replaced by Michigan State in 1953.

The most recent addition (#11) was Penn State in 1990.

The official name of the conference when it was founded, was Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives, but it became better known as the Western Conference. It was unofficially called the Big 10 from 1912, until Chicago withdrew from football in 1939. It was called the Big 9 from 1940 until 1953. When Michigan State joined in 1953, the name Big 10 came back into use.
