Elway graduated with a 3.0 GPA and a degree in economics. On the football field, John set NCAA records of 774 completions, 1243 attempts, 9349 passing yards, 77 passing touchdowns, and the lowest career interception percentage of 3.13%.

Lincoln HS was teammate Terrell Davis's alma mater. All of these schools are actual California high schools. Elway was a multi-sport star athelete at Granada Hills. He was on many "all-american" teams in 1979. He had 5711 passing yards, and 49 passing TDs during his high school career.

As a senior baseball player, Elway hit .491 and had a 4-2 pitching record while leading his team to the Los Angeles city championship.
