Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was NOT allowed in UFC 1?

Answer: fish hooking

Fish hooking is inserting your fingers into the mouth, nose, or other orifice of your opponent and then pulling in an attempt to tear the tissue. All of the others were perfectly legal and, with the exception of choking, are now illegal.
2. What was strange about Art Jimmerson's ring attire at UFC 1?

Answer: He wore one boxing glove.

Art Jimmerson was a boxer and as a tribute to his sport he wore one glove during his match with Royce Gracie. Unfortunately it didn't help him as he submitted in under 2 minutes.
3. Who won UFC 1 and went on to win two more UFC tournaments?

Answer: Royce Gracie

Royce Gracie's family helped put together the first UFC as a way to show off the family patriarch, Helio's, Brazilian jiu jitsu which they claimed could be used to beat any opponent of any size. Royce won despite being the smallest man in the tournament and not even being considered the best practitioner of the art in the family. That honor was long thought to belong to Rickson Gracie.
4. How many rounds were the fights in UFC 1?

Answer: unlimited

There were no limits on the number of rounds, however, each round lasted 5 minutes. Fights today are 3 five minute rounds, or 5 five minute rounds in title fights.
5. What early UFC fighter is known as "The World's Most Dangerous Man"?

Answer: Ken Shamrock

At each of their peaks, Shamrock and his brother Frank were both widely considered the best in the world in mixed martial arts.
6. What fighter made his promotional debut at UFC 5 and had a co-starring role alongside Robert DeNiro and Edward Burns in the movie, "15 Minutes"?

Answer: Oleg Taktarov

Oleg Taktarov won UFC 6, and portrayed an eastern European killer with a fondness for videotaping his crimes in "15 Minutes".
7. Which early UFC fighter never made the transition into professional wrestling?

Answer: Guy Mezger

Mezger was a protege of Shamrock and is now president of HDNet Fights. The others all had stints in either the WWF (now the WWE) or WCW as well as Japanese organizations.
8. Which fighter from UFC 4 got a Hollywood role as Random Tasks in "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery"?

Answer: Joe Son

Joe Son only fought once in the UFC but it was memorable for the sheer number of groin strikes he absorbed from Keith Hackney.
9. What feared fighter had a fighting style known as "pit fighting" that he developed in the bars and streets of Huntington Beach, CA?

Answer: David "Tank" Abbott

Abbott had early success in the UFC, but as more fighters came into the sport, his technique-free style led to him losing more fights than he won.
10. Which former presidential candidate once referred to the the UFC as "human cock-fighting", which led to the sanctioning of the sport by individual states?

Answer: John McCain

McCain has since backed away from that statement, applauding the efforts of the UFC to institute rules and become a state by state sanctioned sport like boxing.
