Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Hall of Fame great Hank Aaron hit a massive 755 career home runs. Which Major League pitcher gave up his very first one?

Answer: Vic Raschi

The others listed were pitchers after the 1950s. Just days into the 1954 season, Bobby Thomson was injured and it put Hank into the regular lineup. The game took place on May 23 against the Cardinals. Aaron was only 10 days into his career when he hit his first four-bagger dished up by Vic Raschi in the sixth inning of the game. Hank had two RBIs and the Braves won 7-5. Hank would play 21 seasons with the Braves in Milwaukee and Atlanta, then two seasons with the Brewers.

He retired in 1976 and waited for his induction in 1982.
2. Which of these second basemen retired with the most home runs for their position?

Answer: Jeff Kent

The others listed were all Hall of Fame outfielders. Kent played from 1992-2008. Playing for six teams he appeared in over 2000 games at second base. Jeff was mostly noted for winning the NL MVP Award in 2000 with the Giants. His biggest home run season was the 33 to win that award.

In 2004 he surpassed Chicago Cub Ryne Sandberg for the career second baseman record. After hitting number 283, Kent just kept going and retired with 377 in 2008.
3. Who hit the first home run in baseball history in the 1870s?

Answer: Ezra Sutton

The others listed weren't born until during the 20th Century. Sutton played in 18 seasons from 1871-1888. He was there on third base for the Cleveland Forest Citys of the National Association on opening day of the league in 1871. On May 8, he hit the historical home run in the sixth inning off Chicago White Stockings pitcher George Zettlein out of the confines of the field. Ezra hit another home run in the game making history again as the first player to hit two home runs in a game.

The Forest Citys finished eighth of nine teams with their 10-19 record. Sutton hit 25 career home runs, four in the National Association and 21 in the National League. Ross Barnes of the NL White Stockings hit the first National League home run in history in 1876.
4. Which player missed becoming the first 40-40 player (40 home runs and 40 stolen bases) in history by one home run in the 1970s?

Answer: Bobby Bonds

The others all retired before 1970. The 14-season Bobby Bonds was a San Francisco Giant in 1973. He hit a career-high 39 home runs along with stealing 43 bases. Bonds missed the historical mark by one home run. Jose Canseco was the first player in history to reach the goal in 1988 with the Athletics. Alfonso Soriano later became a 40-40 Club member in 2006 as a Washington National.
5. Which player hit the first walk-off inside-the-park grand slam in history in the 1950s?

Answer: Roberto Clemente

The others were all past Hall of Fame greats and died before 1950. On July 25, 1956 the Pirates were hosting the Chicago Cubs at Forbes Field. With the Pirates down 8-5 in the ninth inning, Clemente stepped up to the plate with nobody out facing a new Cubs reliever by the name of Jim Brosnan. Clemente's centerfield drive had the fans on their feet as Roberto flew around the bases for a 9-8 Pirates win.
6. In somewhat of an oxymoron, which pitcher hit a home run on the very first pitch of his own first plate appearance?

Answer: Bill Lefebvre

The others never pitched a game in the Major Leagues. Bill Lefebvre put his own cherry on the beginning of his career by hitting one out on the first pitch that he ever saw. Lefebvre and his Boston Red Sox were hosting the Chicago White Sox on June 10, 1938. With the White Sox rolling over Boston, Lefebvre debuted as a reliever late in the game. Taking his turn at-bat in the eighth inning he hit his first home run from the first pitch by White Sox reliever Monty Stratton.

The White Sox won the game 15-2. Bill pitched for two seasons before WWII and two seasons after.
7. Who was the first father/son duo to hit back-to-back home runs on the same team during a game in history?

Answer: Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr.

The other options never existed in Major League Baseball. The California Angels were hosting the Seattle Mariners on September 14, 1990. In the first inning of the game it was Ken Sr of the Mariners who came to bat against the Angels' Kirk McCaskill for a two-run home run. Next at-bat was Junior with his solo home run.

The Mariners still lost the game to the Angels 7-5. The elder Griffey retired in 1991 with 152 home runs. Griffey Jr retired in 2010 with 630 home runs.
8. Which of these pitchers took 19 season before hitting their first home run?

Answer: Bartolo Colón

The others weren't pitchers and never played for more than 15 seasons. Colon began his pitching career in 1997 with the Cleveland Indians. It would not be until 19 seasons later before he hit his first home run in 2016 with the New York Mets. Randy Johnson had to wait 16 seasons before he hit his first with the Diamondbacks in 2003.

It was the only home run of Randy's career. Nolan Ryan waited 14 seasons before he hit his first in 1980 with the Houston Astros. Ryan hit another one in 1987 for his career total of two.
9. Who was the first American League slugger to hit eight home runs in eight consecutive games in the 1980s?

Answer: Don Mattingly

The others retired before the 1970s. Mattingly with the Yankees in his entire 14-season career reached this record feat between July 8 to July 18 of 1987. In those eight consecutive games he hit 10 home runs. 'Donnie Baseball' would go on to hit 30 in the season.

His season-high was 35 in 1985. Dale Long was the first player to ever accomplish this in 1956 with the Pittsburgh Pirates of the National League. The great Ted Williams retired in 1960 while Snider of the Dodgers retired from baseball in 1964.
10. Which team was the first in baseball history to hit 14 grand slams in a season?

Answer: Oakland Athletics

The Oakland Athletics hit an amazing 14 grand slams in the 2000 season. This broke the record of the Atlanta Braves who hit 12 in 1997 and the St. Louis Cardinals who also hit 12 in the 2000 season. The Athletics hit 239 home runs in the season for a second place home run ranking.

They would go on to win the AL West in the season with a 91-70 record but would lose to the Yankees in the ALDS.
