Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Mad Mike" played college hockey for which ECAC team from 1972-1974, compiling 51 points in 51 games?

Answer: Colgate University

Mad Mike played for Colgate before being drafted by his hometown Boston Bruins.
2. In December 1979, in a game versus the New York Rangers, Milbury did what controversial action?

Answer: Jumped into the stands, removed a spectator's shoe, and beat him with it

Said Mike years later: "It's unbelievable that after more than 30 years in the game, pummeling a guy with his loafer will be my legacy. But I guess it's better than having no legacy at all".
3. Mad Mike was the head coach for what All-Star team?

Answer: Wales

He was the head coach of the Wales Conference team at the 1991 All-Star Game, where he generated some controversy by including enforcer Chris Nilan and checker Brian Skrudland ahead of players such as Kirk Muller and Guy Lafleur. However, Nilan and Skrudland both missed the game due to injury.

As a result of Milbury's controversial roster picks, the league's board of governors changed their policy so that future teams would be chosen by committee.
4. Mad Mike had a knack for going through coaches like most people change socks. In the 11 years he was GM, how many coaching changes did he make?

Answer: 8

Mike Milbury got his start with the Islanders in 1995 as the head coach. When Don Maloney was fired, Milbury assumed dual duties as coach and GM. Amazingly, the Islanders made only 6 coaching changes in the 20 years prior. Rick Bowness took over for Milbury (1997-1998), Milbury took over for Bowness (1998-1999), Bill Stewart replaced Bowness (1999), and former Islander Butch Goring was next (1999-2001). Lorne Henning took over for Goring midway through the 2001 season for 17 games, Peter Laviolette replaced Henning with success leading a big turnaround in 2001-2002, and making the playoffs in both his years with the team (2001-2003).

The fan favorite coach was then fired when the team failed to get out of the first round in consecutive years, and was replaced with Steve Stirling, who was viewed by many as a Milbury puppet (2003-2006).
5. You think the coaches had it rough? Mad Mike was known for not pulling any punches when talking about his players or former players. Mad Mike once said of one of his players, "This kid's playing like he's sniffing glue". What future All-Star was Milbury referring to?

Answer: Eric Brewer

Brewer played in the 2003 NHL All-Star game while with Edmonton.
6. "He's a gutless puke, that's what ________ is. That's why he doesn't wear an Islander uniform anymore. And he gets paid way too much, but that's my fault". Who was Milbury referring to?

Answer: Travis Green

Milbury said this after Travis Green, then with Anaheim, slammed Islanders defenseman Kenny Jonsson into the glass from behind.
7. "He's a big man and big things are expected of him. Every time I saw him (after the benching) he looked like he wanted to punch me in the mouth - which could be a good sign". Who was Mad Mike talking about?

Answer: Todd Bertuzzi

Too bad Mad Mike traded him before he reached his potential. Bertuzzi would go on to be the prototypical power forward in the NHL, scoring 97 points with 144 penalty minutes with the Vancouver Canucks in 2002-03.
8. In a profanity laced tirade, Mad Mike went after this former Islander (whom he traded) during the 2002 playoff series versus Toronto. He allegedly executed a "can opener" in which a defenseman puts his stick between an oncoming player's legs to slow him down. Who was this player?

Answer: Bryan McCabe

According to Mad Mike: "He can't (bleeping) pivot that well, and that's why he uses it". Said McCabe in response: "He didn't seem to have a problem with me doing it while I was there".
9. Mad Mike was known to be ruthless in arbitration hearings. In fact, he allegedly made one Islander goaltender cry during the process. Who was it?

Answer: Tommy Salo

The source described general manager Mike Milbury's brief on Salo as 'the most horrific character assassination ever seen in an arbitration for an NHL player.
10. Mad Mike doesn't just save the verbal venom for the players, and he dishes it out to their agents as well. Milbury said the following: "It's too bad he lives in the city. He's depriving some small village of a pretty good idiot" about Ziggy Palffy's agent. Who was that man?

Answer: Paul Kraus

Milbury had an ongoing dispute with Kraus, and eventually traded the fan-favorite Palffy because the Islanders couldn't afford to keep him. Some other Milbury gems about Kraus include: "We hope that Ziggy will come to his senses. We have no hope Paul Kraus will." And, "I think the agent is a moron and way in over his head."
