Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following set a record for winning a batting title, and it being the lowest average for a batting crown?

Answer: Carl Yastrzemski

Yastrzemski batted for a Triple Crown in 1967 with the Boston Red Sox, and he batted .326. His .301 average in 1968 was good enough to top Danny Cater of the Athletics and Tony Oliva of the Twins. In the batting crown race, Carl was the only American Leaguer to bat over .300 with his .301.

In the National League in 1968, the Reds' Pete Rose won the crown while four others hit over .300 also.
2. The 1920 World Series with Cleveland against Brooklyn saw a couple of World Series firsts. An Indians player hit the first World Series grand slam. Also, Indians pitcher Stan Coveleski went 3-0 in the World Series. Who was the next pitcher after Coveleski to win three games without a loss in one World Series?

Answer: Harry Brecheen

The 1946 World Series pitted the Cardinals against the Red Sox. Cardinal pitcher Brecheen started both game two and six with wins, then came from the bullpen to win the deciding game seven win.
3. The Black Sox Scandal was the 1919 World Series when many Chicago White Sox players were going to rig the series against the Cincinnati Reds. The agreed sign that the 'fix' was in amongst all those on and off the field, was beaning the first Cincinnati batter. Who was Cincinnati's lead-off hitter who was hit in the back by pitcher Eddie Cicotte?

Answer: Morrie Rath

Like many other players from the White Sox who were banned, 1920 was Rath's final season also, but unrelated to the fixing incident. The Reds won the World Series five games to three.
4. This pitcher was the first to throw a no-hitter in his first Major League start, but he was out of baseball by the end of that season. Who was this pitcher?

Answer: Bobo Holloman

On May 6, 1953, Holloman of the St. Louis Browns was given his first start, and threw his no-no against the Philadelphia Athletics. Holloman even batted in three of the Browns' runs to help his own cause in the 6-0 victory. The game ended with Holloman on the mound, two outs in the ninth inning, and the bases were loaded. Eddie Robinson made the final out by flying out to right field. Holloman did not return to the Major Leagues due to owner Bill Veeck who bought Bobo's contract from the farm team, just returned him and got his money back. No other team thought that Holloman was good enough to buy a contract for. How sad that was.
5. Winning percentage is a pretty good indicator of just how good a pitcher is. In 1959, Roy Face of the Pittsburgh Pirates set a National League record for going 18-1. Johnny Allen set an American League record for going 15-1 in 1937 with the Indians. Who set an American League record for the worst pitching season record by going 1-20 in a season?

Answer: Jack Nabors

Nabors was a Philadelphia Athletic in 1916. The Athletics had a horrendous season, finishing in last place 54.5 games behind the pennant-winning Red Sox. No Philadelphia starting pitcher had a winning record in the season. They were Joe Bush (15-24), Elmer Myers (14-23), Jing Johnson (2-8), and Nabors' 1-20. Nabors came back for a third season in 1917, then retired after two games. Jose DeLeon of the Pirates set a National League record in 1985 for going 2-19.
6. In the 1995 season, the divisional playoff series was added to postseason play. This meant that a team had to win a three-game playoff series to be crowned Division Series Champions, and also in a best of seven series in the NLCS to grant a berth to the World Series. Which of these teams swept their first two opponents in NLDS and NLCS without losing a game, then were swept themselves in the World Series?

Answer: Colorado Rockies

The Rockies met the Boston Red Sox in Colorado's first World Series appearance in 2007. The Rockies had easily dismantled the Phillies 3-0 in the NLDS, then the Diamondbacks 4-0 in the NLCS. The Red Sox gave the Rockies a taste of their own medicine in a four-game sweep, including a 13-1 and 10-5 blowout.
7. In 1984, who dished up Pete Rose's 4000th career hit?

Answer: Jerry Koosman

On April 13, Rose was a Montreal Expo, and doubled off Phillies pitcher Jerry Koosman in the fourth inning. The Expos would win it 5-1, and Rose would go on to hit 4256 times in his career, the most of any player. Ironically, Pete's 4000th hit came 21 years to the day of first career hit for the Cincinnati Reds in 1963.

His first career hit was a triple off Pittsburgh Pirate pitcher Bob Friend.
8. In 1939, the great Lou Gehrig benched himself just before the game with the Detroit Tigers. This was after playing in 2130 consecutive games that began in 1925. 15 seasons later, this would be the first time that Gehrig's name did not appear in the box score. Which team did Lou play against in his final career game?

Answer: Washington Senators

After the lineup change was announced on the public address system, Tiger fans gave Lou a tremendous and lengthy standing ovation at Briggs Stadium in Detroit. The Yankees blew out the Tigers in the game, 22-2. In 1925, Gehrig began his streak by pinch-hitting for Pee Wanninger. In 1939, Lou was replaced by Babe Dahlgren.
9. In 1942, longtime Pittsburgh Pirate Paul Waner was wearing a Boston Braves uniform, and collected his 3000th career hit. Paul was the seventh player in baseball history to surpass the 3000-hit mark. Which player was the next to reach 3000 hits?

Answer: Stan Musial

It would not be until 1958 before another player did it, in the name of Stan Musial. Stan was a career Cardinal from 1941-1963. Touted by many as the greatest baseball player in history, his 3000th hit finally came. He retired with 3630 hits, second all-time to Ty Cobb when he retired in 1963.
10. On June 23, 1917, this historical game saw Babe Ruth and his Boston Red Sox take on the Washington Senators. After Ruth as a pitcher walked the lead-off batter, he became furious with umpire Brick Owens for his calls. After Owens had enough of Ruth's and catcher Pinch Thomas' screaming, both players were ejected. Who was the batter that Ruth walked?

Answer: Ray Morgan

In came Ernie Shore as a relief pitcher. Before Shore threw his first pitch, backup catcher Sam Agnew threw out the walked batter (Morgan) trying to steal second base. Shore retired the next 26 consecutive batters. While the out at second was credited to Shore, nobody received credit for the no-hitter or perfect game, as no Red Sox player reached base after that.
