Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team stopped the Yankees from winning the American League, and appearing in and potentially winning a sixth consecutive World Series?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

The others were all National League teams. From 1949-1953, the Yankees won a historic five consecutive World Series. In 1954, the Cleveland Indians halted this streak by winning the American League with a record of 111-43, eight games ahead of the second place Yankees. The Indians lost the World Series 4-0 to the New York Giants.
2. Reggie Jackson was once perched by himself for being the only player in history to strike out 2000 career times. Who finally joined this elite club with Reggie?

Answer: Andres Galarraga

The others never reached the 1400 mark. In his 18th season in 2003, Andres in a Giant uniform, closed out the season with exactly 2000 strikeouts. Reggie also opened the door to the 2500 club by striking out 2597 times in his career.
3. Which team put the brakes on Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

The Phillies and Pirates were members of the National League. DiMaggio's streak was in 1941, and was stopped by the Indians on July 17. Eight years prior to this Major League feat, DiMaggio had a 61 game hitting streak with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League in 1933.
4. Two players prevented Babe Ruth from leading, or sharing the league title in home runs for 14 consecutive seasons. Ken Williams of the St. Louis Browns was one of these players. Which Yankee teammate also put a gap in the Babe's home run title streak?

Answer: Bob Meusel

These were all Ruth's Yankee teammates. Williams stopped Ruth's streak of four titles in 1922. After winning two more titles, his streak was stopped again by Bob Meusel, who led the league with 33 home runs in 1925 to Ruth's 25. Ruth began another streak of home run titles again the following season, and continued his streak until 1932, when he saw Jimmy Foxx hit 58 big ones. Ruth's almost miraculous streak lasted from 1918-1931.
5. The world saw Yogi Berra play 2116 games with the New York Yankees. His final four career games were with which team?

Answer: New York Mets

After 18 loyal seasons with the Yankees, Yogi signed a contract across the road with the Mets in 1965. At age 40, he appeared in only four games and had nine at-bats. Berra went to 14 World Series with the Yankees, winning 10 of them.
6. In 1911, why was the party over for Major League pitchers?

Answer: A new ball was introduced into the Major Leagues

In 1911, Major League baseball changed from a rubber-core ball to a new cork and rubber center ball. Immediately it became a batter's game. Frank Schulte led the league with 21 home runs, 10 more than his previous season title. On the average, players' batting averages skyrocketed by 30 points. Ty Cobb of the Tigers hit .420 in the season, and pitchers saw their strikeout totals drop dramatically.
7. Ty Cobb held a record in Major League baseball for 46 years. Which player took this record away from the Georgia Peach?

Answer: Maury Wills

Cobb stole an amazing 96 bases in 1915. His record stood until 1962, when Los Angeles Dodger shortstop Maury Wills became the first player in history to reach the 100 mark, by stealing 102 bases.
8. Ernie Lombardi set a record by batting .300 ten times in his career, a record that stood for over 50 years for a catcher. Which catcher equalled Lombardi's mark with ten .300 seasons of their own?

Answer: Mike Piazza

Lombardi played for 17 seasons, mostly with the Reds and Giants from 1931-1947. His record stood on its own for 54 years. In 2001, catcher Mike Piazza of the New York Mets and former Dodger, tied this mark by hitting .300, his tenth .300 season.
9. Which pitcher in the 1930s prevented Lefty Grove from winning his eighth consecutive strikeout crown?

Answer: Red Ruffing

The others listed began their careers in the 1940s. Grove of the Philadelphia Athletics, won seven strikeout titles in a row from 1925-1931. New York Yankees pitcher Red Ruffing led the league in 1932 by striking out 190 batters. Grove was runner-up by two K's with 188. This was the only time in Ruffing's career that he threw more than 150 strikeouts in a season.
10. Which of the following players won a batting title, thus preventing Rod Carew from winning seven consecutive batting titles?

Answer: George Brett

Brett was the only player listed who played in Carew's era. From 1972-1978, Carew of the Minnesota Twins, earned a batting crown in each season except for 1976. Kansas City Royal George Brett, stepped in and broke Carew's streak by batting .333 to take the title. Carew batted .331 in the season.
