Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1997, who became the youngest driver in Nascar history to win the prestigious Daytona 500?

Answer: Jeff Gordon

This was a memorable win, not only for Gordon, but the entire Hendrick family. Rick Hendrick was in the hospital with leukemia, and watched his cars finish 1-2-3 in the race. Jeff won the race on a last lap pass of Bill Elliott.
2. Which auto-maker took bragging rights when they became the first manufacturer to win three consecutive Daytona 500s?

Answer: Chevrolet

In the first 15 Daytona 500s, Chevrolet could muster only one win. However, from 1989-1991, Chevrolet stood on the podium three times after wins by Darrell Waltrip, Derrike Cope, and Ernie Irvan. In 1992, Davey Allison broke the Chevrolet streak by winning with a Ford. Chevrolet took the rights back for another three consecutive wins from 1993-1995.
3. Which of the following Daytona 500 winners never repeated the trip to victory lane?

Answer: Dale Earnhardt

It took Earnhardt over 20 years to find victory lane in the Daytona 500, but finally won it in 1998. He was killed at Daytona in 2001, while Michael Waltrip earned his first win. Michael repeated in 2003. Elliott took his second win in 1987, after winning it in 1985. Sterling won two consecutive Daytona 500s in 1994 and 1995.
4. The inaugural Daytona 500 held in 1959 was a photo finish that took days to finally make a decision as to who won the race. The winner was finally declared as Lee Petty. Who was the other driver that came up short?

Answer: Johnny Beauchamp

Weatherly was a third race car in the mix at the checkered flag, but was two laps down at the time. Lee Petty, father of the great Richard Petty, would never repeat at Daytona again.
5. Throughout the years of the Daytona 500, fans have learned to expect the unexpected. Another strange finish was in 2002. With five laps to go, and under a red flag condition, the leader of the race got out of his car to pull his fender off his right front tire. The driver was Sterling Marlin, and he was ordered to back of the field for his violation. Who won this race?

Answer: Ward Burton

On a restart with six laps to go, Marlin and Jeff Gordon got tangled up, damaging the right front of Sterling. At the same time, a multi-car crash occurred resulting in the red flag. Ward Burton eventually took his No. 22 Caterpillar Dodge to victory lane.
6. In 1988, which driver became the oldest to win a Daytona 500 at the age of 50?

Answer: Bobby Allison

Bobby was 50 years, 2 months, and 11 days old when the won the big prize in 1988 in his Buick. This was 10 years after winning the Daytona in 1978, when he started the race in the 33rd position while driving a Ford.
7. The 1979 Daytona 500 was the first race at Daytona that was televised. Which two drivers were bumping and banging on the last lap, crashed, then both gave the win to Richard Petty?

Answer: Cale Yarborough and Donnie Allison

On the last lap, Petty was running a distant third. Yarborough and Allison took each other out in a wild finish, allowing King Richard to get the win. Immediately following was a historical nationwide fiasco of Cale and Donnie along with brother Bobby, fighting beside their cars. Nascar was truly born at that point.
8. Richard Petty won an amazing seven Daytona 500s throughout his great career. Which of the following had won four in their career?

Answer: Cale Yarborough

9. Which of the following drivers have won three consecutive Daytona 500s?

Answer: None listed

Even after experiencing 48 Daytona 500s beginning in 1959, no driver had gone to victory lane three consecutive times. The others listed had won it two consecutive times. Richard Petty (1973-74), Cale Yarborough (1983-84), and Sterling Marlin (1994-95).
10. Who won the 2006 Daytona 500?

Answer: Jimmie Johnson

Starting the season in 2006 was tough for the fans with a plethora of driver team changes, new paint schemes, and new faces behind the wheels. In a race which saw a new 'no bump-drafting' rule which meant no aggressive driving, Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth, and Kyle Busch were all black-flagged for 'aggressive driving' during the race.

When the smoke cleared, it was Jimmie Johnson winning his first cup at Daytona. Casey Mears finished second, and Ryan Newman finished third.
