Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following drivers never scored a win in the Top tier of NASCAR, the Sprint Cup Series?

Answer: Ron Hornaday, Jr.

Despite never winning a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, Ron Hornaday has had an illustrious career in the Camping World Truck Series. In his first 346 starts Honraday, Jr. amassed a series leading 51 wins and four championships. Hornaday made 45 Cup Series starts between the 1992 and 2003 season earning only one top ten fiinish, a ninth place at Las Vegas in 2001.
2. Which of these four driver did *not* score their first career victory at Talladega Superspeedway?

Answer: Regan Smith

Smith's first career win came at Darlington Raceway in 2011. Although Regan crossed the finish line first in the fall 2008 Talladega race, he was black-flagged and relegated to an 18th place finish for passing below the yellow line. Regan eventually got his redemption by holding off Carl Edwards on Mother's Day weekend 2011 to earn his first career victory.
3. In 2002 which driver, substituting for Sterling Marlin, earned his first career win in only his second start?

Answer: Jamie McMurray

Jamie McMurray climbed into the number 40 car starting at Talladega Superspeedway after Sterling Marlin was injured in a crash at Kansas Motor Speedway. McMurray finished 26th in his first relief race at Talladega, but it was the next week at Charlotte that McMurray made history beating out Tony Stewart and Bobby Labonte and winning at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
4. Which former crew chief for Jeff Gordon eventually started his own team in the Sprint Cup Series, that included cars bearing the numbers 9 and 19?

Answer: Ray Evernham

Evernham served as the crew chief of the number 24 through three of Gordon's championship runs. In 2001, Ray Evernham left Hendrick Motorsports to start his own team. In 2001, Evernham's team consisted of Bill Elliott in the #9 car, and Casey Atwood in the #19 car.
5. Which of these drivers never scored a victory in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series?

Answer: Todd Bodine

Despite being the only Bodine brother to never win a Sprint Cup race, Bodine found success elsewhere in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Brett Bodine ended his cup career with one win coming way back in 1991. Jimmy Spencer won two races during the 1994 season, and Johnny Benson, Jr. won the 2002 Rockingham fall race.
6. Which of the times below would be considered a quality pit stop in the Sprint Cup Series?

Answer: 11 seconds

The average pit stop is somewhere around 13 seconds, so an 11 second four tire stop could be a race winning move. Many races have been won and lost on pit road, proving that one tenth of a second can make or break you.
7. Which of these drivers was *never* sponsored by Budweiser in his NASCAR career?

Answer: Alan Kulwicki

Kulwicki was famous for his partnership with Hooters. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. ran a Budweiser sponsorship from 2000-2007. Kahne took the Bud sponsorship to the Dodge brand from 2008-2010. Harvick took over the Budweiser sponsor starting in the 2011 season.
8. Which set of drivers listed below are brothers?

Answer: Bobby and Terry Labonte

Bobby and Terry Labonte are the only brothers on the list. Maurice Petty is the son of Lee Petty. Robby Gordon is of no relation to four time champion Jeff Gordon, and Dale, Jr. is the uncle of Jeffrey Earnhardt. Bobby and Terry Labonte were also the first set of brothers to win Sprint Cup championships. Bobby won the 2000 championship and Terry won the 1984 and 1986 series titles.
9. Who won the championship in NASCAR's 50th season, 1998?

Answer: Jeff Gordon

Jeff Gordon's third series title came in the 1998 NASCAR season. Gordon won 13 races en route to the Championship in that phenomenal season.
10. Which of these statements regarding Michael Waltrip's first career win is *not* true?

Answer: Waltrip started on the pole

Waltrip started 19th on that special day. Bill Elliott was actually the driver, who started on the pole for that race. Also the "2001 Daytona 500" was the final race for NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt, Sr, who was killed in a last lap crash of the race.
