Over his 35 year career (1958-1992), Richard Petty won 200 NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) races, almost twice as many as any other driver. He also won the Daytona 500 (mile race), NASCAR's premier event seven times - 1964, 1966, 1971, 1973, 1974, 1979 and 1981.

His last record was at the Bonneville Salt Flats in the U.S. state of Utah, averaging over 300 mph in two runs. He also held the water speed record four times in boats named Bluebird.

Using a General Electric J79 jet engine, Craig Breedlove was the first man to surpass 400 mph, 500 mph and 600 mph on land. He set the last record in November, 1965 and held it until 1970. Wanting the record back Breedlove began work on a supersonic jet car but it has not come to fruition.

The other names listed were jet car drivers with Art Arfons being the most successful. He was mainly noted for using jet-powered drag race cars, not always competitive but a sight to watch, especially in a night race when spectators could see the huge gouts of flame coming out the afterburner of the engine.

Beginning his racing career in 1975, Dale Earnhardt, Sr. won the NASCAR championship seven times. In 1998, he finally won the Daytona 500 only to be killed there in a last-lap crash in the 2001 race.

All four choices were British drivers but three came a few decades before Nigel Mansell, who won the F1 championship and then the CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) Indy Car World Series back-to-back. From Worchestershire, England, Mansell had 31 victories, making him one of the most successful British drivers of all time.
