Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 2009 German Grand Prix was the maiden win for a driver competing in his 130th F1 race. However, he had scored his maiden points in his 1st race at the 2002 Australian Grand Prix. Can you name this driver who had to wait over seven years before getting to stand on the top step of the podium?

Answer: Mark Webber

Mark Webber won the 2009 race at the Nurburgring despite being given a drive-through penalty for colliding with Rubens Barrichello on the first lap. This first victory came 129 races after achieving fifth place on his debut F1 appearance, at his home race in Australia in 2002. The two points he scored were the Minardi team's first points for three years. After the race, he and his team boss, fellow Australian Paul Stoddart, were allowed onto the podium for their own special celebration.

Felipe Massa, Jarno Trulli and Nick Heidfeld all competed in both of these races. The 2002 race also saw Felipe Massa's debut, although his first victory came much sooner than Webber's, at the 2006 Turkish Grand Prix.
2. Brazilian F1 driver, Rubens Barrichello, won his first grand prix in his 123rd attempt, at the 2000 German Grand Prix. With which F1 team did he achieve this long-awaited result?

Answer: Ferrari

Barrichello joined Ferrari for the 2000 season and drove for them for six years, recording a total of nine victories (despite being generally recognised as the number two driver to his team-mate Michael Schumacher). At Ferrari, Barrichello was often on the receiving end of team orders, most notably at the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix when he obeyed an order to let Schumacher pass him to take the win; but not until just before the finish line. The wider controversy resulting from this and similar incidents led to the introduction of rules banning the use of team orders to affect the outcome of a race.

Barrichello's F1 debut was with the Jordan team in 1993 and he went on to race for both the Honda and Williams teams after he left Ferrari at the end of 2005.
3. Jarno Trulli's first F1 victory came in his 119th attempt. At which grand prix did he finally achieve some F1 success?

Answer: 2004 Monaco Grand Prix

Jarno Trulli was known as qualifying specialist, often qualifying high up the grid but being unable to maintain that pace during the race. As a result of this and the general difficulty of overtaking in F1, he often seemed to have a queue of faster cars behind him in the race - a phenomenon which informally became known as the 'Trulli Train'. Despite winning the Monaco Grand Prix in 2004, Trulli was released by his Renault team three races before the end of the season (he was replaced by former world champion, Jacques Villeneuve). Trulli then moved to Toyota, making his debut for his new team at the 2004 Japanese Grand Prix.

The 1997 German Grand Prix was the race at which Trulli scored his first F1 world championship points (for fourth place) and the 1999 European Grand Prix was his first podium finish (second place).
4. What is the name of the 2009 F1 world champion, who had to wait 113 races before recording his first win?

Answer: Jenson Button

Jenson Button made his F1 debut for Williams in 2000 but didn't take his first victory until 2006 when he won the Hungarian Grand Prix for Honda. The race was the first ever grand prix in Hungary to be held on a wet track and Button made good use of both tyre strategy and a safety car period to come through to win the race from 14th place on the starting grid. Button's next race victory was the 2009 Australian Grand Prix and was the first of the six wins he took in his world championship winning season.

Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel- hey have also won the F1 world championship.
5. Which driver, the son of a former F1 world champion, won his first race at the 111th attempt?

Answer: Nico Rosberg

Nico Rosberg is the son of 1982 F1 world champion, Keke Rosberg. He made his F1 debut at the 2006 Bahrain Grand Prix where he achieved the fastest lap of the race, but it still took just over 6 years before his maiden victory came at the 2012 Chinese Grand Prix. Nico's second race win came at the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix; thirty years after his father won the same event.

Michael Andretti and Nelson Piquet Jr. are both sons of former world champions who have competed in F1. Jacques Villeneuve was the 1997 F1 world champion but his father, Gilles, who competed in F1 from 1977 to 1982 never won the world championship.
6. Italian driver, Giancarlo Fisichella, took 110 attempts to win a F1 race. His first victory came in strange circumstances when the race was ended early for safety reasons (and the win was initially incorrectly awarded to another driver). In which country did this eventful race take place?

Answer: Brazil

The 2003 Brazilian Grand Prix was chaotic due to heavy rain both before and during the race which caused numerous accidents. A final crash involving Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso brought out a red-flag and resulted in the race being ended early. Further confusion ensued when officials incorrectly declared Kimi Raikkonen the winner, despite Fisichella and his Jordan team believing they had won the race. Five days later, in a Paris court, Jordan successfully appealed the result and the race win was subsequently granted to Fisichella.

Canada, Italy and Malaysia are three of the other countries which hosted an F1 race in 2003.
7. Double world champion Mika Hakkinen won his first race at the 96th attempt. However, his maiden victory at the 1997 European Grand Prix was overshadowed by an event which led to which driver being disqualified from the 1997 world championship?

Answer: Michael Schumacher

Mika Hakkinen came through to win the 1997 European Grand Prix at Jerez following a collision between the leader, Michael Schumacher, and his world championship title rival Jacques Villeneuve. Prior to the race, Schumacher was leading the world championship by a single point and needed only to finish ahead of Villeneuve to secure his 3rd championship and his Ferrari team's first championship for 18 years.

When Villeneuve attempted to overtake Schumacher for the lead of the race, Schumacher drove into the side of Villeneuve's car in an apparent attempt to take him out of the race.

However, the incident back-fired on Schumacher as Villeneuve completed the race to win the title and Schumacher was subsequently disqualified from the championship. Hakkinen went on to win back to back world championship titles in 1998 and 1999, becoming the 7th man to achieve this feat.

He retired from F1 at the end of the 2001 season.
8. Which Belgian F1 driver took his first F1 victory in his 95th race, the 1989 Canadian Grand Prix?

Answer: Thierry Boutsen

Thierry Boutsen made his F1 debut at his home grand prix at Spa-Francorchamps in 1983, driving an Arrows. He qualified 18th fastest but retired from the race on only the fourth lap with a suspension problem. His first victory at the Canadian Grand Prix in 1989 was also the first victory for the Williams-Renault partnership, which went on to win five constructors' world titles and four drivers' world titles between 1992 and 1997. However, Boutsen had left the team at the end of the 1990 season to make room for Nigel Mansell, who went on to take the first of Williams-Renault's world titles in 1992.

Jacky Ickx was a Belgian F1 driver who competed in a total of 122 F1 races, winning eight of them. Bertrand Gachot raced in F1 for both Belgium and France. He is particularly remembered for being jailed for two months in 1991, giving seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher the opportunity to make his F1 debut. Rene Arnoux was a French F1 driver from 1978 to 1989.
9. For which team was Jean Alesi driving when he took his first F1 victory, at the 91st attempt, at the 1995 Canadian Grand Prix?

Answer: Ferrari

Jean Alesi made his F1 debut at his home race in France in 1989 with the Tyrrell team, before signing to drive for Ferrari in 1991. He spent five difficult seasons with Ferrari who were experiencing one of the worst runs of poor form in their history. However, he did achieve 13 podium finishes with the team before his first victory at the 1995 Canadian race. A further two second place finishes followed before he moved to the Benetton team for the 1996 season, swapping seats with Michael Schumacher.

Alesi went on to compete in F1 for Sauber, Prost and Jordan before retiring from the sport at the end of the 2001 season. He never raced for McLaren.
10. Eddie Irvine mounted a challenge to become the first Ferrari world champion for 20 years, after his team-mate Michael Schumacher was sidelined mid-season with a broken leg. In which year did he take his maiden grand prix victory (at the 82nd attempt) and come close to making F1 history?

Answer: 1999

Eddie Irvine took his first ever F1 victory at the season opening Australian Grand Prix in 1999 and went on to become Ferrari's main title contender following Michael Schumacher's accident at Silverstone, which put him out of the next six races. Irvine went on to win another three races during the season but was unable to prevent McLaren driver Mika Hakkinen from taking the world championship title by just two points.

Irvine continued racing in F1 for a further three years with the new Jaguar Racing team. However, he was unable to win any more races, with his best results being a couple of 3rd place finishes.
