Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which championship winning car owner is known to competitors and fans as "The Cat in the Hat"?

Answer: Jack Roush

Seldom seen without his signature Panama hat, the co-owner of Roush Fenway Racing entered the NASCAR scene in 1988 and is also well known for his engineering contributions to the auto industry. His teams have won championships in all three of the sport's top series, including his first Cup title in 2003 with driver Matt Kenseth.

Jack Roush was inducted into the International Motor Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
2. Known for a colorful past that includes a prison term for manufacturing moonshine, which inaugural Hall of Fame inductee won fifty races as a driver before beginning his full time career as team owner in 1966?

Answer: Junior Johnson

The Wilkes County, North Carolina native began competing in 1955 and quickly became one of the sport's most well known figures. As a team owner, he enjoyed six titles, three each with Darrell Waltrip and Cale Yarborough, before closing his operation in 1995.

Junior received a pardon from President Reagan in 1986 and in 2007, he became part owner in a North Carolina distillery. His "Midnight Moon" is now sold (legally) across the US.
3. For the first time in nearly twenty years, the 2011 Sprint Cup championship was won by a driver/owner. Name this outspoken and somewhat controversial Indiana native.

Answer: Tony Stewart

After winning two championships with Joe Gibbs Racing, Stewart left the organization at the end of the 2008 season. His partnership with entrepreneur Gene Haas formed Stewart Haas Racing and the organization won four races in its first season, all with Stewart's team.

"Smoke's" reputation for doing things his own way was further magnified in 2012, when he introduced a third team into the top series, the number 10 Go Daddy Chevrolet, piloted by former IRL star Danica Patrick.
4. Which organization won the title in 1999 with Hall of Fame driver Dale Jarrett?

Answer: Robert Yates Racing

After its inception in 1989, Robert Yates Racing formed an alliance with Ford and enjoyed success with several drivers, including Ricky Rudd, Jarrett, Ernie Irvan, and the late Davey Allison. Robert retired in 2007. Two years later, economic woes prompted his son Doug to merge the team with Richard Petty Motorsports.

The younger Yates remained active as one of the sport's top engine builders.
5. In 2006, it was announced that Toyota would enter Sprint Cup competition with a team owned by which former Daytona 500 winner?

Answer: Michael Waltrip

Toyota made its Cup series debut at the beginning of the 2007 season with cars piloted by Waltrip, Dale Jarrett and David Reutimann. The first two years brought very limited success and the team was not without its share of controversy in the garage.

The organization began a turnaround in 2010 with the addition of Martin Truex, Jr., who was joined two years later by Clint Bowyer and veteran Mark Martin.
6. Which "powerhouse" team originated in 1984 and has won multiple Cup titles with Terry Labonte, Jimmie Johnson, and Jeff Gordon?

Answer: Hendrick Motorsports

The Concord, NC based organization has employed a number of popular drivers, including Darrell Waltrip, Ken Schrader, Kyle Busch, and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Team owner Rick Hendrick founded the non-profit Hendrick Marrow Program in 1997. A Charlotte area road bears the name of his father "Papa" Joe, who passed away in 2004. Both men are past recipients of North Carolina's Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award, an honor given to state citizens for contributions and extraordinary service.
7. Trevor Bayne won the 2011 Daytona 500 in a part time ride owned by which brothers?

Answer: Glen and Leonard Wood

Wood Brothers Racing began in 1950 and started the 2013 season as the oldest active team on the circuit. During its long relationship with Ford Motor Company, the 21 car has been driven by many NASCAR greats including Donnie Allison, Neil Bonnett, and David Pearson.

Both Glen and Leonard have been inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
8. With twelve Indy Racing League titles and over seventy Cup victories, which celebrated team owner won his first Sprint Cup championship in 2012?

Answer: Roger Penske

Brad Keselowski drove the Number 2 Miller Lite Dodge into Victory Lane five times during the season, winning the title by thirty-nine points over second place Clint Bowyer. "The Captain" had enjoyed years of success with Hall of Fame driver Rusty Wallace and was finally able to add a Sprint Cup championship to his long list of accomplishments.
9. After facing sponsorship problems for several years, Dale Earnhardt Inc. merged with what team in 2008?

Answer: Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates

DEI was formed in 1980 by the late Dale Earnhardt, Sr., and his wife Teresa. After her husband's death in 2001, Teresa continued to operate the company until economic and sponsorship woes prompted the merger. Earnhardt Ganassi Racing won four races in its second season, three with Jamie MacMurray and one with former Formula One star Juan Pablo Montoya.
10. The late Dale Earnhardt, Sr. won six of his seven titles driving a car owned by what North Carolina based organization?

Answer: Richard Childress Racing

Richard Childress retired from driving in 1981, choosing to continue his career as a full time owner. In 2001, he became the first owner to win titles in all three of the sport's top series when Kevin Harvick won the Nationwide (then Busch) championship.

Other notable drivers within the company have included Jeff Burton, Ricky Rudd and Richard's grandsons Austin and Ty Dillon.
