Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He's best known for being the first player in NBA history with more than 15,000 assists. However, in addition to that great accomplishment he was also the first to record more than 3,000 steals as he ended his career with 3,265. Who was this point guard who played for Gonzaga University before a 19 year career with the same NBA team?

Answer: John Stockton

John Stockton played for the Utah Jazz from 1984 until 2003. For nearly his whole career Stockton played alongside power forward Karl Malone. Both players were elected to the Hall of Fame but oddly enough at the time of their retirement they were ranked number one and two in the NBA in turnovers committed over a career.
2. This NBA defensive stalwart certainly wanted the ball as he ended his career with a staggering average of 22.9 rebounds per game. This incredible statistic may be overshadowed by his career average of 30.1 points per game. Who was this player who began his career with the Philadelphia Warriors in 1959 and ended it with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1973?

Answer: Wilt Chamberlain

Over the course of his Hall of Fame career Chamberlain made 13 All-Star teams and won 4 MVP awards. Interestingly, Chamberlain is one of the rare players that actually had a higher field goal percentage (54%) than free throw percentage (51%) over the course of his career.
3. Born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1963 this defensive star played in the city of Houston while in college and for the majority of his NBA career. Which of these players had a dreamlike career by winning two NBA Championships and having an astounding 3,830 blocked shots?

Answer: Hakeem Olajuwon

Hakeem Olajuwon played for the Houston Rockets from 1984 until 2001 before retiring with the Toronto Raptors in 2002. Although he was seven feet tall, Olajuwon had great agility and his offensive moves prompted people to nickname him "The Dream". Possibly Olajuwon's best defensive season was in 1989-90 when he lead the league in blocks and rebounds and finished eighth in steals.
4. In spite of his 6' 7" height this player led the NBA in rebounds per game (RPG) seven straight seasons during the 1990s. Who was this notorious player, who averaged 18.7 RPG for the Detroit Pistons in 1991-92 and won five championships during his career?

Answer: Dennis Rodman

Fittingly Dennis Rodman was nicknamed "Dennis the Menace" as he was an extremely scrappy defensive player and rebound expert. Although he was a limited offensive player he did lead the league in field goal percentage in 1988-89 and in 1987-88 he averaged 11.6 points per game.
5. Although he played second fiddle to Michael Jordan most of his career this defensive star retired with more than 2,300 steals and often guarded the opposing team's best offensive player. Who played the position of small forward for the Chicago Bulls from 1987 to 1998?

Answer: Scottie Pippen

In spite of his defensive prowess, Scottie Pippen never had a season where he averaged at least 10 rebounds per game and only once did he have at least 100 blocks in a season. During his career Scottie Pippen won six NBA championships and was voted to the NBA All-Defensive First Team seven times. Pippen was by no means a one-dimensional player as he compiled over 18,000 points and 6,000 assists in his career.
6. Having a towering 7' 4" frame certainly helped this player be the first to have more than 300 blocks in a season six times. Who averaged a staggering 5.6 blocks per game in the 1984-85 season as a member of the Utah Jazz?

Answer: Mark Eaton

Mark Eaton played for the Utah Jazz his whole career which lasted only 11 seasons. In addition to his skills at blocking shots, Eaton was also a very durable player as he missed less than 10 games over his first 10 seasons.
7. While reaching 300 blocks in an NBA season is a rare accomplishment, obtaining 300 steals is even more rare. Who was the first player to do so, accomplishing the feat in 1985-86 as a member of the San Antonio Spurs?

Answer: Alvin Robertson

Alvin Robertson was a four-time All-Star and he led the NBA in steals three times. Robertson was also the first player to record a quadruple double with steals as a metric as he had a game in 1986 with 20 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, and 10 steals.
8. An often overlooked statistic in the NBA is the offensive rebound. One player in particular had a knack for rebounding his as well as his teammates misses as he led the league eight times in offensive rebounds. Answer: Moses Malone

In 1974 Moses Malone became one of the first players to go from high school directly into professional basketball. His first two season were played in the American Basketball Association (ABA) but his most productive years were between 1978 and 1989 when he made the All-Star team every season and averaged nearly 25 points a game.

Answer: Dikembe Mutombo

Dikembe Mutombo was a dominant defensive player for the first 10 seasons of his NBA career as he averaged more than three blocks and 12 rebounds per game. Mutombo was also known for his physical play and the use of his elbows which caused injuries to players including Michael Jordan, Yao Ming, and Lebron James.

In addition to his NBA success, Mutombo has gained recognition for his humanitarian work through his namesake foundation that works to improve living conditions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other poverty-stricken areas.
10. This NBA defensive star did not have a breakout year until his sixth season in the league. Who was this powerful player of the Los Angeles Clippers who made just 971 of his first 2,308 (42%) free throw attempts in his career?

Answer: DeAndre Jordan

Jordan's rebounding skills and ability to obtain good post position helped him lead the league in field goal percentage for four straight seasons including two seasons shooting at better than 70%. While his play on the court garnered headlines, Jordan is also well-known for a contract dispute before the 2015-16 season in which he had verbally agreed to sign with the Dallas Mavericks before he backed out and resigned with the Los Angeles Clippers.
