Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the World Cup 1990 semi-final, England first suffered the pain of being beaten through the penalty shoot out, who beat them?

Answer: West Germany

The game itself was a tense but open affair. After full time the two teams were locked at 1-1. Andreas Brehme had scored a fortunate goal via deflected free kick, to give the West German side the lead on the hour. However, with 10 minutes remaining, England equalised through Gary Lineker. England were the better side in extra time and made a handful of excellent chances only to see the game finish 1-1 after extra time and on to the penalties.

England took the first penalty which saw Lineker score to make it 1-0. Brehme then made it 1-1, followed by Peter Beardsly 2-1, Lothar Matthias 2-2, David Platt 3-2, and Karl Heinz Riedle 3-3. However, Stuart Pearce an excellent penalty taker had his shot saved by German keeper Bodo Illgner and the game had turned away from England. Olaf Thon stepped forward to beat Peter Shilton and make it 4-3 to West Germany. Up stepped Chris Waddle and he blasted the penalty well over the crossbar to give the West Germans victory and a place in the final. The game was played in Delle Alpi stadium in Turin, Italy on July 7th 1990.

West Germany beat Argentina in the final 1-0, curtosy of- a penalty scored by Andreas Brehme.
2. Who became the first Englishman to miss a penalty in a penalty shoot out?

Answer: Stuart Pearce

"Psycho" as he was nicknamed, stepped forward to take his spot kick whilst the score was 3-3 between England and West Germany in the 1990 WC SF. Sadly for the popular Nottingham Forest defender, he saw his kick saved easily by Bodo Illgner.
3. The 1990 semi-final saw two England players miss, but which player sent the ball sky high over the cross bar, to seal the fate of his nation?

Answer: Chris Waddle

Waddle was an outstanding talent and had played a very strong part in getting England to the semi-final in 1990. 4. During the 1996 European Nations finals, did England win a shoot out?

Answer: Yes

Yes, the Euro Nations quarter-final played at Wembley Stadium on June 22nd 1996, saw both sides play well in a 0-0 draw. Spain had two goals disallowed when on closer inspection they should of stood. However, when it came down to it, England won the shoot out 4-2.

Answer: Paul Ince and David Batty

A fantastic second phase match between England and Argentina saw drama unfold at the highest level. The game played in the Stade Geoffroy Guichard, Saint-Etienne, saw after six minutes the scoring begin as it would end with a penalty, which Gabriel Batistuta converted for Argentina.

However just four minutes later England levelled the score through an Alan Shearer penalty. Within a further six minutes, England led through one of the greatest goals to be scored in a finals, when the 18 year old Liverpool forward Michael Owen scored after a long run and top quality finished.

However, in first half stoppage time Zanetti leveled things up with a clever goal from a free kick. Early in the second half, England saw David Beckham sent off for kicking out at the Argentinian midfielder Simone. England playing with 10 men played wonderfully and had what seemed a perfectly good goal disallowed late on by Sol Campbell. Extra time saw no chage in score. So on to penalties it went.
