Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. She won the all around at the 1993 and 1994 World Championships. In addition to these titles she also won 7 Olympic Medals, 5 of those being individual medals and 2 of those being gold medals. Who is she?

Answer: Shannon Miller

Despite her numerous medals from 1991 to 1996, she failed to make the 2000 Olympic team.
2. At the age of 15 she became the first American women to win an all around title at the world championships. Despite her success in 1991, by 1992 she was no longer the best in the world, and won no individual medals at the Barcelona Olympics. Who was she?

Answer: Kim Zmeskal

As it turned out, the 1992 Olympics were won by Tatiana Gutsu of the United Team, and dominated by Shannon Miller who won five medals. However prior to those Olympics it was Zmeskal who received all the attention. Zmeskal's only medal was the team bronze.
3. Many believe that this gymnast was as good as Shannon Miller, yet always plagued with bad luck. In 1993, she was in first place prior to the last event where she fell. However, her bad luck did not stop her from competing in three Olympics, winning the bronze in floor at the 1996 Olympics, or winning two individual silver's at the 1993 World Championships. Who was she?

Answer: Dominique Dawes

Dawes once swept every event at the USA Championships. Sadly and oddly, in the 1993 and 1994 world championships, her last event was the same vault that she crashed both years.
4. She won the 1984 Olympics. While this was and still is a great accomplishment, 1984 was the only year she would win a World (championship) or Olympic medal. Who was she?

Answer: Mary Lou Retton

She won other individual medals at the 1984 Olympics, and the team silver in addition to her all around title.
5. While everyone remembers one gymnast from the 1984 Olympic games, this American also scored gold. Her gold was on the bars, and she followed it up with a silver on the floor. Who was she?

Answer: Juliane McNamara

She also won a bronze on bars at the 1981 World Championships.
6. In 1995 at the age of 13, what gymnast became the youngest United States Champion ever. That same year she won a silver on beam at the World Championships. However, 1995 would be her best year as she won no individual medals at the 1996 Olympics and did not even make the 2000 Olympic Team. Who was she?

Answer: Dominique Moceanu

Unfortunately, she is probably best known for the lawsuit invovling her parents. Moceanu dropped out a few days prior to the Olympic Trials. She was injured and her chances of being picked to the team were not very good. Jenny Thompson was also a young star who won Junior Nationals at age 11, but did not make the 1996 team, and dropped out of gymnastics just prior to the 2000 Olympics.
7. She is another Mag 7 gymnast. In addition to the team gold, she also won a silver on uneven bars. She retired for two years after the 1996 Olympics, but then came back to make the 2000 team, where she got to compete in the all-around (unlike 1996). Who was she?

Answer: Amy Chow

Chow was quiet and has never really gotten much media attention. Besides being a gymnast, she was also a pianist and very successful academically. Dawes was the other member of the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Teams. Ironically, Dawes competed all around in 1996, but not in 2000 the opposite of Chow.
8. She won her first International medal on floor at the 1978 Worlds. After that she made the 1980 Olympic team, but did not get to go to those Olympics as they were boycotted. She decided to stick around for the 1984 Olympics where she not only made and medaled with the team, but won a bronze on beam. Who was she?

Answer: Kathy Johnson

This is the same Kathy Johnson who became a commentator for gymnastics.
9. This gymnast suffered many injuries during her career. She missed the 1992 Olympic Trials, and was petitioned onto the Olympic Team. Answer: Betty Okino

The petition was controversial as she was a Karolyi gymnast and he had a lot of power.

The Olympics were not her first injury caught on camera. In a televised meet prior to those Olympics, she had a very scary fall on the unever bars that resulted in a back injury.
