Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The game of ice hockey is played on an ice surface, known as the what?

Answer: Rink

It is in fact played on a rink. This is actually the first rule in the NHL rulebook. Before they played on rinks, they played on ponds.
2. How many teams face off against each other in a game of ice hockey?

Answer: Two

Two teams go head to head to see who can score the most goals in a game. Can you imagine four teams going off against each other? That would be insane.
3. To get a goal in game of ice hockey, a player has to hit something across the goal line and into the net. What is that they have to hit?

Answer: Puck

They hit a puck into to the net. It would be a little too easy for an NHL goalie to stop something as big as a beach ball.
4. What happens when a player does something illegal?

Answer: Penalty

There are a number of things you can do to receive a penalty in the game of hockey, some examples would be tripping, slashing, fighting, boarding and many, many more.
5. How many players can be on the ice at one time for each team in the NHL?

Answer: 6

You are allowed six players on the ice at one time (three forwards, two defenseman, and one goalie).
6. What does the NHL stand for?

Answer: National Hockey League

The National Hockey league was created in 1917, and every year the victor of the playoffs receives the Stanley Cup as league champs.
7. In the 2000-01 seasons, how many teams were in the NHL?

Answer: 30

At the beginning of the NHL there were only 6 teams. The NHL didn't expand until in 1967 when they had the first NHL expansion. Many more expansions followed until they finally hit 30 teams in the 2000-01 season by adding two more teams.
8. How many periods are in a regular NHL game?

Answer: Three

There are 3 20-minute periods in a regular NHL game, but some times they need overtime, which is five minutes long in the regular season and sudden death in the playoffs.
9. When hockey was first played, what were the sticks made of?

Answer: Wood

There are not many players left in the NHL that use wood sticks. Most use composite sticks that weigh close to nothing.
10. Who is known as the 'Great One' in the NHL?

Answer: Wayne Gretzky

Gretzky had a career that is hard to describe. He scored 894 career goals and had 2857 career points. Along the way he captured 61 NHL records.
