Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The UFC kick-started its business venture with the concept of putting fighters of different techniques against each other to see which fighting style was the most successful. Which of these people had the idea for the concept?

Answer: Art Davie

Art Davie came up with the idea after seeing a series of videos documenting the Gracie family winning fights with their Jiu-Jitsu prowess. Davie contacted Rorion Gracie about holding a tournament where eight fighters of different disciplines would fight each other. Gracie accepted as a way of further advertising his family's fighting style of "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" to a larger audience, and hand-picked his younger brother Royce Gracie to take part.

It has also been suggested that Rorion Gracie hand-picked the other combatants to give Royce a strong chance of winning.
2. Who were the main three commentators during the UFC 1 event?

Answer: Bill Wallace, Kathy Long and Jim Brown

The team of Bill Wallace, Kathy Long and Jim Brown were put together as an eclectic mix of experience and passion. Wallace was an undefeated Kickboxer and Karate practitioner who is also a highly-respected coach of many martial arts disciplines. Long was 18-1 female kickboxer who later went on to fight in a brief MMA career. NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown was brought in as he was a big boxing fan, and also helped bring some star power to the event.

Despite a lack of experience, Brown would be the only member of the team to continue his role past the first event.
3. The first broadcasted fight lasted just 26 seconds as karate fighter Gerard Gordeau blasted his way past sumo wrestler Teila Tuli. With what did Gordeau end the fight so quickly?

Answer: Head Kick

Despite being outweighed substantially by his opponent, Gordeau stunned the crowd as he took out Tuli with an incredible kick to the head. The kick knocked out three of Tuli's teeth, slow motion replays picked up the sight of one of Tuli's teeth leaving his mouth and flying out into the crowd upon the impact of Gordeau's kick.

The other two were later found embedded in Gordeau's right foot. Gordeau fought the rest of the evening with the teeth in his foot and ended up hospitalized back home in Holland when the foot became infected.

This would turn out to be Tuli's only MMA fight.
4. The second match saw kickboxer Kevin Rosier take on karate practitioner Zane Frazer. Which one of the two won and advanced to the semi-finals?

Answer: Kevin Rosier

Rosier took the early advantage when he dropped Frazer with a punch, but Frazer recovered and got the fight back to a standing position against the cage. Frazer started to utilise the lack of rules in the UFC at the time, kneeing Rosier in the groin and pulling his hair. Both fighters showed a lack of conditioning and were tired after just four minutes, however Rosier landed another punch to knock Frazer down, and Frazer's corner threw in the towel after a few more punches on the ground.
5. The third fight saw Gracie Jiu-Jitsu fighter Royce Gracie take on professional boxer Art Jimmerson. Gracie unsurprisingly won the match, but did he win it by submission?

Answer: Yes

Jimmerson entered the cage wearing a boxing glove on his left hand, whilst leaving his right hand bare-knuckled. This strange strategy proved futile as Gracie took him down with a judo sweep immediately, and transitioned into a full mount position. Gracie had no need to apply a submission hold though, as the boxer Jimmerson had no interest in being on the ground, and verbally submitted despite not being in a submission hold.
6. Ken Shamrock made his UFC debut in the fourth tournament fight of the night, taking on kickboxer Patrick Smith. Shamrock had made a name for himself by going undefeated in which other MMA-style organisation?

Answer: Pancrase

Shamrock had fought in the first three Pancrase events, and had been successful in each one of his fights, defeating Masakatsu Funaki, Yoshiki Takahasi and Takatu Fuke. All the fights were won by various submissions, with the fight against Fuke lasting just 44 seconds.
7. Ken Shamrock continued his winning streak by defeating Patrick Smith in 1 minute 49 seconds. Which submission hold did Shamrock use to defeat Smith?

Answer: Heel Hook

Despite being a kickboxer, Smith showed much more tolerance for being on the ground than his predecessors in the previous fights. Shamrock took Smith down almost straight away, but Smith made it difficult for Shamrock to muster any offense on the ground. Shamrock persisted and eventually was able to secure a leg, but Smith refused to give in and hit a series of elbows to Shamrock's legs. Shamrock held on though and locked in a heel hook, forcing Smith to tap out.
8. The first semi-final saw Gerard Gordeau take on Kevin Rosier. Both fighters came into the match with issues stemming from their previous fights, Gordeau had a broken hand from the only punch he threw against Tuli, whilst Rosier was exhausted after his epic four-minute match. Who won the semi-final and advanced to the tournament final?

Answer: Gerard Gordeau

Rosier came out and went straight after Gordeau, hoping to use the little energy he had stored in between fights to end this fight early. Gordeau held firm though, and used his karate skills to set up a right straight to the jaw that knocked Rosier down. Gordeau quickly swarmed on Rosier with more punches, then some stomps to the ribs that finished Rosier off.
9. The second semi-final pitted two future UFC Hall of Famers against each other, as Royce Gracie took on Ken Shamrock. The fight lasted just under a minute, and it was quite a one-sided affair. Royce Gracie dominated with his jiu-jitsu skills, but with what submission hold did he win the fight with?

Answer: Hadaka Jime (Gi Choke)

The fight began with Gracie immediately shooting for a leg. Shamrock sprawled in defense, but Gracie was able to pull guard after a scramble for position. Gracie was working an open guard and baited Shamrock into standing up to attempt a leg submission. As Shamrock got to his feet, Gracie executed an ankle grab sweep to come up into Shamrock's half guard. Shamrock then made the mistake of bellying out while trying to pick an ankle, leaving his neck exposed for Gracie to finish him with Hadaka Jime, the judo version of a rear naked choke.
10. The final of the tournament saw Royce Gracie take on Gerard Gordeau. On the line was the UFC 1 Championship, as well as a cash prize of $50,000. Which of the two fighters won the final and became the first UFC Champion?

Answer: Royce Gracie

Royce Gracie was crowned the first ever UFC champion when he submitted Gordeau with a rear naked choke. Gordeau spent the first minute struggling to stop Gracie taking him down, but once Gracie got him to the mat it didn't take very long for him to sink in a rear naked choke for the victory.

After the match Gracie thanked his family for teaching him Jiu-Jitsu, and when asked what he would be spending his prize money on, he famously responded; "I'm going to Disneyland!".
