Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On 11th November 1993, the first UFC event took place and the winner of the 8 man tournament was Royce Gracie. Royce Gracie also won UFC 2 and was on the way to winning UFC 3. Royce however broke his hand while winning a very tough fight in round one which led him to pull out of the tournament. Which fighter did Royce break his hand fighting and beating?

Answer: Kimo Leopoldo

Kimo was very much an enigma entering the cage preaching the Lord's name, carrying a big cross with his body covered in tattoos. This mountain of muscle however put on a great fight, and although he lost, he gained lots of respect in doing so. Gracie had walked through almost every fighter to this point but Kimo put the Brazillian Jui-Jitsu master to the test.
2. The UFC has produced some great champions. One of the most famous and most controvertial is 'The Huntington Beach Badboy' Tito Ortiz. Tito made his debut at UFC 13 on May 30th 1997, and beat Wes Albritton by TKO. Which fighter fought and defeated Tito at the very same event?

Answer: Guy Mezger

Many believe Tito was cheated in this fight, even thought he tapped out to a submission by Mezger called a Guillotine choke. Earlier in the fight it seemed Tito had already won the fight, when Mezger appeared to tap out himself, but the referee never saw it and was given the win by submission.
3. When Brazilian Vitor Belfort came on the scene, he had instant success with a number of vicious TKO victories all by strikes. He became known as the 'Phenom' and was an instant fan favourite at UFC 15 inn October 1997. Vitor faced his toughest challenge yet and although Vitor was favourite to win, he lost. Who beat Vitor at this event?

Answer: Randy Couture

Randy had such good wrestling, that he was able to take Vitor off his feet and hit him with punches on the ground until the fight was stopped. A very famous win for Randy Couture.
4. The UFC has had some great rivalries over the years, and one of the longest running was between UFC Legends Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz. What was the UFC event where this famous feud saw them first fight?

Answer: UFC 40 - Vendetta

These two warriors fought 3 times and Tito managed to win all 3 fights. The first on November 22nd 2002, will be remembered as a UFC Classic as both men put on a tough fight. The other 2 fights saw Tito beat Ken quite easily. Even after the fights, the 2 men continue to hate each other.
5. One of the most loved fighters the UFC has ever produced is Chuck 'The Iceman' Liddell. Chuck is known for being a stand up fighter that can KO a fighter with a single hit. This was proved at UFC 49 Unfinished Business in August 2004. Who did Chuck fight and KO at this event?

Answer: Vernon White

Vernon White was stupid enough to say that Chuck had tried dodging him in the past (avoiding fighting him) because he knew he would lose. This made Chuck mad and he said he wanted to beat him as he didn't like him one bit. Turned out to be a stupid thing to say by Vernon who got beat down and finished with a great punch that saw him out cold.
6. Who was the first-ever fighter to be crowned UFC Lightweight Champion?

Answer: Jens Pulver

Jens won the title by fighting Caol Uno on February 23, 2001, at UFC 30 Battle on the Boardwalk. He won by a unanimous decision after 25 minutes of fighting.
7. UFC Champion Pat "The Croation Sensation" Miletich defended his belt many times as did Matt Hughes, but what was the outcome of the fight they had together?

Answer: They never fought

Pat Miletich actually had his own fighting academy and Matt Hughes was one of his best and most successful fighters. They trained together for many years, and although they fought at the same time in the same weight division, they never fought each other. Miletich lost his belt to Carlos Newton and Matt Hughes beat Newton to win and keep the belt.
8. Tim "The Maine-iac" Sylvia had how many UFC fights before he was given his title fight?

Answer: 1

9. Who defeated long-time Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes at UFC 46 Supernatural in January 2004?

Answer: B.J. Penn
