Three time junior national champion Kristal Uzlec while still exercising in the gym, had decided not to compete. Sam Sheehan broke her toe prior to the competition. Like Patterson, she petitioned to the camp and was selected as a team alternate for Worlds.

Based on their performances at Nationals and at the training camp, Luikin and McCool were selected for the Pan American Games Team. Carly Patterson was the 2002 Junior National Champion.

It was determined at the hospital that Deandra was going to be fine. The fall happened while she was attempting a double front.

Holly Vise led going into the final rotation. With her strongest events, bars and beam already completed, she ended up in a tie for 2nd place after the final rotation.

The top three gymnasts in the women's competition received automatic spots on the World's Team. The top three were Courtney Kupets (the winner), Holly Vise, and Tasha Schwikert(tied for second). The whole team has since been selected and the other gymnasts include Ashley Postell, Carly Patterson, Annia Hatch, Sam Sheehan (alternate), and Terin Humphrey (alternate).
14. Who surprised everyone by finishing second in the Senior Men's All-Around?

Answer: Jason Gatson

When Jason Gatson first came onto the U.S. senior men's gymnastic scene, he was a huge success. At 17, he became the youngest man at that time to compete for the United States at World's. Yet after his initial success, injury seemed to hold him back.

He did not even qualify for the Olympic Trials in 2000. It appears though as he was back since he placed second in the all-around, and received an automatic spot on the World's Team. By the way, the results were 1. Paul Hamm, 2. Jason Gatson, and 3. Blane Wilson.

In the men's competition, only the top two were granted an automatic spot. Martha Karolyi mentioned that maybe in 2004, the women should do the same thing and cut down from two spots to three spots.
