Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was the 2007 Cricket World Cup played?

Answer: West Indies

No games during the World Cup were sold out. Eight venues including Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua & Barbuda, Kensington Oval in Barbados, Queen's Park in Grenada, Providence Stadium in Guyana, Sabina Park in Jamaica, Warner Park Stadium in St Kitts & Nevis, Beausejour Stadium in Saint Lucia and Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad & Tobago were used throughout the tournament.
2. Which team was ranked first at the beginning of the World Cup?

Answer: South Africa

Recent form suggested New Zealand (113 ranking points in 3rd) and South Africa (128 ranking points in 1st) were the teams to beat in the tournament. Australia (125 ranking points in 2nd) and their history of success in the World Cup would always have them favourites with the bookmakers despite losing some games in One Day Series in Australia and New Zealand.
3. Which two teams played the first match of the 2007 Cricket World Cup?

Answer: West Indies and Pakistan

The host nation got the honour of playing the first match of the tournament. They kept their home fans happy with a 54 run defeat of Pakistan. Enigmatic Marlon Samuels (62 off 70 balls) top-scored in their total of 9/241. In reply, Shoaib Malik (62 off 54 balls) saved Pakistan from embarrassment as they were bowled out for 187 in 47.2 overs.
4. Which coach died during the tournament?

Answer: Bob Woolmer

Woolmer, the Pakistani coach at the time was found dead in his hotel room after Pakistan was defeated by Ireland in a major upset. Jamaican police carried out a well-publicised investigation into his death, to come to the conclusion that Woolmer died from natural causes.
5. Which batsmen scored six sixes in an over, the first to achieve the feat in World Cup and One Day International history.

Answer: Herschelle Gibbs

Gibbs achieved this against the bowling of Daan van Bunge in their Group A match against the Netherlands at Warner Park. The quote "We wanted to achieve history today, but not like this" was a fair summation made by the Dutch skipper in the post-match media conference.
6. Which umpire officiated in his fifth consecutive World Cup final?

Answer: Steve Bucknor

Officiating the World Cup final between Australia and Sri Lanka alongside Pakistani, Aleem Dar was another feather in the cap for the well-respected West Indian umpire. It was also a tournament where Rudi Koertzen overtook David Shepherd as the most capped umpire in One Day Internationals with 173 appearances in the middle.
7. Who became the first player to take four wickets in four consecutive balls in international cricket?

Answer: Lasith Malinga

In the process of achieving this feat, Malinga (4/54 in 9.2 overs) became the fifth player to take a hat-trick in World Cup cricket. Playing for Sri Lanka against South Africa, Malinga almost stole the game for the Sri Lanka but Robin Peterson helped the Proteas crawl home with one wicket remaining chasing 209.
8. Which batsman scored the most runs in the 2007 World Cup final?

Answer: Adam Gilchrist

Adam Gilchrist's innings of 149 runs off 104 balls was one of the best witnessed in One Day International cricket history. His 172 run opening wicket partnership with Matthew Hayden was the highest in a World Cup final and gave Australia a major advantage over the Sri Lankan's in their rain and light affected match. Gilchrist himself broke many records by becoming the fifth batsmen to score a century in a World Cup final behind Clive Lloyd, Viv Richards, Aravinda de Silva and Ricky Ponting.

His score was the highest in World Cup final history.
9. Australia finished the tournament undefeated, and extended their streak of matches without a loss in World Cups to 29.

Answer: True

It was Australia's fourth World Cup finals appearance in a row and their third successive World Cup win after successes in England (1999) and South Africa (2003).
10. Which player was named Player of the Series?

Answer: Glenn McGrath

McGrath, in his last international campaign was magnificent and ever-reliable for Australia. He took a record breaking 26 wickets throughout the tournament; 3 more than Muralitharan and fellow countryman, Shaun Tait. He took his 56th World Cup wicket against Bangladesh, also overtaking Wasim Akram's tally of 55 wickets to become the highest wicket taker in World Cup history.
