Answer: 90 km

The grueling 90 km course has numerous climbs as it twists through the Swedish province of Dalarna.
2. In what year was the first Vasaloppet held?

Answer: 1922

It was won in 1922 by Ernst Alm with a time of 7:32:49.
3. What is the route of the Vasaloppet?

Answer: Salen to Mora

The course winds through several other towns, about 10 km apart, where food, drink, and medical services are provided.

Answer: King Gustav Vasa

In 1520, King Gustav Vasa fled from Stockholm, where the Danes were slaughtering the Swedish royalty, to Mora to attempt to raise the townspeople to fight. When he got there however, he found he wasn't wanted, so he continued his flight on skis towards Norway. Shortly thereafter, the citizens of Mora changed their minds, and sent their two fastest skiers after him.

The skiers caught up with the king 90 km away in the town of Salen. Today's race goes in the opposite direction as their pursuit.

The American race began in 1972, followed by the Japanese in 1981, and the Chinese in 2003.
