Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What two players were the first to be named league co-MVPs in a season?

Answer: Hernandez-Stargell

In 1979, Keith Hernandez of the Cardinals and Willie Stargell of the Pirates were the first to experience this.
2. How many career doubles did Tris Speaker hit?

Answer: 793

Speaker hit his last of 793 for the Philadelphia A's in 1928. Most of his career doubles were with the Cleveland Indians.
3. Which of these players hit the most Grand Slams?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

Gehrig belted 23 throughout his great career with the Yankees from 1923-1939. This is just one of a few career leading categories for the Iron Man.
4. In 1959, the Dodgers beat the White Sox 4 games to 2. What pitcher won two games and was credited with saving two more for the Dodgers?

Answer: Larry Sherry

Sherry was an ace relief pitcher. This was the last 20th Century World Series involving a Chicago team. Ted Kluszewski was Chicago's only offense.
5. What year was Joe DiMaggio's last year in baseball?

Answer: 1951

1951 was his last, and his last game was a World Series win over the New York Giants in a 4 games to 2 victory.
6. What pitcher won 3 World Series games in one Series during the 1920s?

Answer: Stan Coveleski

Coveleski of Cleveland won 3 games in the 1920 World Series against Brooklyn in a 5 games to 2 victory. The Indians were powered by Tris Speaker. No pitcher had won 3 games in a Series for another 26 years.
7. Who was the first player to win two All-Star game MVP awards?

Answer: Willie Mays

'Say Hey' of the San Francisco Giants won them in 1963 and 1968. The next to achieve this feat was Gary Carter in 1981 and 1984. This is clearly a milestone.
8. In 1920, Carl Mays threw a pitch which killed what American League premiere shortstop?

Answer: Ray Chapman

The tragic accident happened in August 1920. Surprisingly enough, the Indians still won the World Series even after one of their own had fallen. This was the first on-field death of a player in history (and was still the only one as of the end of the 20th Century).
9. In 1972, what team finished the season with only 59 wins and still had a pitcher win over 25 games?

Answer: Philadelphia

The Phillies just were not there that year. Steve Carlton still won 27 and set a record for most consecutive wins for a last place team that year with 15.
10. What pitcher was the first to win 200 career wins without ever winning 20 games in a season?

Answer: Milt Pappas

Pappas of the Cubs was the first in 1972. The Cubs in that era just didn't have the firepower or support to their pitchers.
