Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Big House, or Michigan Stadium as it is officially known, first opened in what year?

Answer: 1927

The cost to construct the stadium in 1927 was $950,000, quite a steal considering the billions the University of Michigan has made in the stadium over the ensuing decades.

When it opened the stadium was solely host of Wolverine football games and had a capacity of more than 72,000 people.

Then head football coach Fielding Yost knew the fandom was growing and convinced the architects to put in footers in the original design that would make expansion of the stadium easier. Considering more than 35,000 additional seats have been added over the years, it was a good decision.
2. In 1930 Michigan Stadium became the first stadium in the world to do what?

Answer: Use electronic scoreboards to keep time.

Just prior to the 1930 season the first electronic scoreboard was installed in the stadium.

The scoreboards (one at each end of the field) were first used in a 0-0 tie with Michigan state, and saw their first victory a week later in a 14-13 win over Purdue.

Those original scoreboards lasted until 1968.
3. The first time Michigan Stadium hosted a crowd of more than 100,000 people was during an October 1956 matchup with what in-state rival?

Answer: Michigan State University

The first crowd of over 100,000 was Oct. 6, 1956 when Michigan State University defeated the Wolverines 9-0.

At that time it was the largest crowd to ever watch a college football game. Official attendance was 101,001.
4. In 2014 the stadium hosted a pair of professional teams from Europe. The game, played with a black and white ball, had the largest attendance to-date, for a game in the U.S. in that sport. What sport did the two teams play?

Answer: Soccer

Manchester United bested Real Madrid 3-1 on Aug. 2, 2014 in front of 109,318 people.

The previous attendance record for soccer in the U.S. had been set in 1984 during an Olympic matchup when more than 101,000 people attended.

Soccer is known as Football in most of the world outside of the U.S.
5. More than 100,000 people have clamored into Michigan Stadium twice to see a hockey game. Were they both professional games?

Answer: No

In 2010 the stadium hosted "The Big Chill at the Big House" where collegiate rivals Michigan and Michigan State played in the first hockey game in history to have more than 100,000 fans see it in person. Michigan won 5-0.

In 2014 the National Hockey League hosted the "Winter Classic" outdoor hockey game at the stadium. In that game visiting Toronto bested the host Red Wings 3-2 in a shoot-out.

Neither attendance total can be officially confirmed. For both games electronic bar code scanners froze and tickets stopped being counted by "Guinness World Record" officials. Through various methods numbers were "figured out". The college game holds the official record from Guinness.

The college game announced more than 113,000 in attendance, but Guinness officials could only certify about 85,000 based on scanner records. The NHL game announced about 105,491 (The total number of tickets sold), but due to inclement weather not every person showed up. An official attendance figure was never released, only that it was "less" than the 104,173 Guinness decided to credit the college game with.
6. In addition to football, Michigan Stadium has hosted both the men's and woman's team for what other University of Michigan sport?

Answer: lacrosse

The Michigan Men's Lacrosse team was founded in 1940 and began playing in Michigan Stadium in 2012.

The Woman's Lacrosse team was founded in 2014 and began playing in the stadium the same year.

The men's team is the one of the oldest lacrosse teams in the nation, but only became a varsity sport in 2012. The team won more than 84 percent of its games from 1940 on, but once it joined the NCAA and rose above a club program it didn't post a winning season in the first three years (2012-14).
7. Which women's team used Michigan Stadium as a home base from 1973-75?

Answer: field hockey

The first three years the Women's Field Hockey team was around they played at Michigan Stadium. While there the team posted only 8 victories against 17 losses.

Once the team moved out of the stadium it began to get better. The team had posted at least 8 conference championships, a national championship and had more than 32 All-American players.

Prior to the opening of it's own field hockey arena in 1995, the team played in several places on campus, including Ferry Field (1976-86), the Tartan Turf (1987-90), and Oosterbaan Fieldhouse (1991-94).
8. What annual celebration is hosted by the University of Michigan at the end of each school year?

Answer: graduation

The stadium hosted more than 75 University of Michigan graduating classes. It hosted the ceremony from 1927 through the end of the 20th century and beyond every year except the rare occasion the stadium was under renovation.
9. What U.S. President announced details of his "Great Society" program during a speech given at the stadium in 1964?

Answer: Lyndon Johnson

Johnson's program was similar in scope to Roosevelt's "New Deal" which helped to draw the U.S. out of The Great Depression in the 1930s.

Johnson first mentioned the program at a speech about 2 weeks prior to his speech at Michigan, but he announced what the program would entail and how he would implement it during the speech in the Big House.
10. Despite being the largest college stadium in the U.S. (in terms of seating) the stadium doesn't appear as large as some others in the country. Why is that?

Answer: Much of the seating is below ground level

Much like the technology used in a Tardis on TV's "Doctor Who" the stadium is "bigger on the inside".

While no science fiction technology was used, the stadium was simply dug into the ground instead of built completely on top of it.

Rows and rows of seating were dug into the ground leading to field level, rather than having massively gaudy, gigantic buildings set up in downtown Ann Arbor.
