Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. March 24th, 2001 -- The "Big Unit" also known as Randy Johnson was on the mound pitching against the San Francisco Giants in a Spring Training Game. He pulled back his arm and launched a 95mph fast ball. Jimmy looked down for a moment to pick up his beer and the crowd suddenly went crazy. He turned to his buddy Chad and asked -- "What just happened?"

Answer: Randy's fast ball smashed into a bird

Randy Johnson was a ten (10) time All-Star, a five (5) time Cy Young Winning Pitcher, a World Series Champion and MVP in 2001, pitched a no-hitter and a perfect game, had over 300 Major League Wins and managed to obliterate one unlucky feathered spectator during an illustrious baseball career.

Incidentally the bird was a white dove and the umpire's call was "no-pitch" although they could have called the ball "fowl."
2. February 17th, 2002 -- Chad and Jimmy waved their American flags and cheered loudly for Apolo Anton Ohno. The Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games -- the crowd was buzzing in anticipation for the final of the 1,000m short-track speed-skating competition. Jimmy stretched to watch the skaters come off the final turn but slipped and fell forward into the lap of a buxom Dutch supporter. There was a loud gasp and a groan as Jimmy struggled to entangle himself. Exasperated he looked up at his buddy Chad and asked -- "What just happened?"

Answer: Every athlete fell in the last turn giving Australia its first ever Winter Olympics Gold Medal

Steven Bradbury made history in winning Australia its first ever Winter Olympics Gold medal. The 28-year old from Brisbane had skated in three Olympics previously and never made it any further than the quarter-finals in an individual competition. In the quarter-finals and semi-finals, Bradbury had been incredibly fortunate to progress with athletes falling or getting disqualified.

In the final, Bradbury was way behind the four other skaters when all four managed to collide in the last turn and fell meters from the finish line. Steven Bradbury stayed on his feet and skated through to win gold. Apolo Ohno from America literally crawled on hands and knees to pick up the silver medal.
3. October 11th, 2003 -- New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox are meeting for Game #3 in the American League Championship Series. Jimmy is a die-hard Red Sox fan and could not resist slipping out at the start of the 4th innings to buy a new baseball cap. Even from the souvenir stand he heard the crowd's excited reaction to a play on the field. Sprinting back to his seat, an exasperated Jimmy asked Chad, "What just happened?"

Answer: In a bench-clearing brawl on the field, Pedro Martinez throws 72-year-old Yankees Coach Don Zimmer to the ground

In one of the most intense ACLS series in recent memory, the 4th innings of the 3rd game saw both benches clear after Roger Clemens threw a high pitch that pushed Manny Ramirez back off the plate. Manny approached the mound and Yankees players ran to protect their pitcher. Pedro Martinez joined his Boston team-mates on the field only to find 72-year-old Don Zimmer preparing to unleash a hay-maker. Pedro grabbed the old coach by the head and tossed him to the ground.

The scene was total chaos and Zimmer was taken to the hospital on a stretcher.

The Yankees went on to win Game #3 and triumphed in the series 4-3 winning Game #7 on an Aaron Boone homerun at Yankee Stadium.
4. August 29th 2004 -- Jimmy and Chad had taken a trip to Athens for the Summer Olympic Games. They couldn't afford tickets to the athletics competition so they decided to go watch the marathon. Waiting for the leaders at the 35km mark, Jimmy could cross his legs no longer and ran for the bathroom. The Brazilian, Vanderlei de Lima came into view and suddenly chaos erupted. Jimmy dashed to his friend's side and gasped -- "What just happened?"

Answer: Vanderlei de Lima was mugged by an Irish priest

Vanderlei de Lima is arguably the greatest Brazilian distance runner of his time. Leading the Olympic marathon with less than 7km to go, he looked like he would be Brazil's first ever Olympic marathon champion. Suddenly, from the crowd, Cornelius Horan (a defrocked Irish priest) rugby tackled de Lima.

A Greek spectator (Polyvios Kossivas) helped free de Lima from Horan's grasp. The Brazilian athlete lost 20 seconds in the incident and was passed by Stefano Baldini of Italy and Meb Keflezighi of the USA.

He did finish in the Bronze medal position but the "mugging" ultimately cost him the gold medal. At the closing ceremony, de Lima was awarded the IOC's Pierre de Courbetin medal in the spirit of sportsmanship.
5. May 25th, 2005 -- Jimmy and Chad managed to snag tickets to the UEFA Champions League Final between Liverpool and AC Milan played at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul Turkey. Milan were clearly the better side and led 3-0 at half-time. Jimmy, exhausted from the long flight and devastated that his beloved Liverpool were getting trounced, fell asleep in the stands. He was woken an hour later with fans singing and cheering. Confused he looked around and asked -- "What just happened?"

Answer: Liverpool scored 3 goals in the second half and then won the match 3-2 on penalties

Liverpool staged the most remarkable comeback that has ever been seen in European club football competition. AC Milan led at half-time by three goals to nil. Maldini had scored in the very 1st minute and Crespo had added two goals in the 39th and 44th minutes.

After the intermission Steve Gerrard got one back in the 54th minute. Amazingly, team-mates Smicer and Alonso would score in the 56th and 60th minutes to tie the score. The game went to penalties. Serghino, Perlo, and Shevchenko missed for the Milan team. Hamman, Cisse, and Smicer hit the mark for Liverpool giving them the title and capping an unbelievable comeback.
6. July 9th, 2006 -- Jimmy and Chad were crammed like sardines into the stands of Berlin's Olympic stadium. The FUFA World Cup Final between Italy and France was tied 1-1 and the game was now in extra time. 110 minutes had passed and the game looked like it was going to penalties. Jimmy was attempting to secure a phone number from a cute German girl in the row behind him. Suddenly a deafening roar went up from the crowd, turning back to Chad, Jimmy asked -- "What just happened?"

Answer: Zinedane Zidane head-butted the Italian player Marco Matterazzi

Marco Matterazzi had been baiting Zidane all game and finally when he insulted his sister, Zidane turned and head-butted the Italian in the chest. It drew an immediate red card from the referee and the French captain was forced to leave the pitch. Because of his dismissal he was not available to help the French team in the penalty shootout.

Italy scored all five spot-kicks and Trezeguet missed giving the Italians the World Cup Championship for 2006. After the macth Zinedane Zidane retired immediately from international soccer.
7. October 27th, 2007 -- Jimmy and Chad journeyed down to Harper Davis Field in Jackson Mississippi to see two NCAA Division III powerhouses play a game of football. The Trinity Tigers were playing the Millsaps Majors. Millsaps got the ball with 2.03 left on the clock and leading 24-22. Jimmy headed for the exits but a few minutes later the crowd erupted into cheering. Running back to the bleachers he asked his buddy Chad -- "What just happened?"

Answer: Trinity College scored a touchdown with no time left on the clock on a play that included 15 laterals and lasted for 62 seconds.

Sports writers have called the play the "Mississippi Miracle" and "Lateralpalooza." With two minutes left, Trinity College was down 24-16. Riley Curry scored to cut the lead to 24-22. Trinity then held Millsaps to a three-and out and got the ball back with only two seconds left on the clock and 60 yards needed for a score. What followed was the longest play ever recorded in NCAA College history involving fifteen (15) laterals, seven players, and 62 seconds of clock time. Mike Christensen with the local newspaper called the final play "one of those you-had-to-see-it-to-believe-it plays." Another sportswriter from San Antonio called it "one of the greatest plays in sports history."
8. Jimmy and Chad love all sports and decided to head out to Ellensberg, Washington for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Game between Central Washington University and Western Oregon University. Jimmy was at the concessions stand when Sara Tucholsky of WOU stepped up with two runners on base and smashed her first ever home run over the left field fence. There was some commotion on the field and when Jimmy returned to his seat he found Chad and the other spectators with tears in their eyes. Confused he asked, "What just happened?"

Answer: Tucholsky broke her leg rounding 1st base and was carried around the bases by members of the opposite team

In one of the greatest exhibitions of sportsmanship ever seen at the college level, Mallory Holtman and Liz Wallace of Central Washington University, carried Sara Tucholsky around the bases after she had broken her ankle rounding 1st base. They stopped at every base to allow Sara to tap the base with her foot. The rulebook disallowed any team-mate to assist the injured player and a pinch runner would have meant her home run would have only counted as a single. The assisted home run gave Western Oregon University a 4-2 win and eliminated CWU from the playoffs.
9. October 31st, 2009 -- Halloween! Jimmy and Chad have courtside tickets at the AT&T Center for the San Antonio Spurs versus the Sacramento Kings Game. Jimmy is returning from the nachos stand and Manu Ginobili is being tended to by trainers on the sidelines. There is a buzz in the stadium. "Chad -- What just happened?"

Answer: A bat was dive bombing the players and Manu Ginobili swatted it out of the air

A bat had appeared in the rafters of the AT&T Center during the first quarter of the Kings-Spurs NBA game. The Halloween visitor had sent players to the sidelines on multiple occasions while staff tried to capture him. Unfortunately for the bat, Manu Ginobili's lightning reflexes were his undoing as the Argentine swatted the bat out of the air before picking him up and taking him off the court. Rumor has it that Manu had to go for a precautionary rabies shot after the game was over.

Incidentally, the Spurs rallied around their "Bat-Man" and beat the Kings 113-94.
10. On July 11th, 2010 Jimmy Jump and his buddy Chad were in the stadium for the FIFA World Cup Final between Spain and the Netherlands played in South Africa. Before kick-off, Jimmy disappeared and re-appeared on the field running toward the World Cup Trophy displayed at mid-field. His mission -- to touch the trophy and dress it with what item of clothing?

Answer: Red Hat

Jimmy Jump is a notorious pitch invader from the Catalan area of Spain. His attempt to touch the trophy was thwarted by three security officers who promptly arrested him. During his "invasion" career, he has illegally trespassed on the field during the 2004 European Championships soccer final between Greece and Portugal, the 2008 European Championships semi-final between Germany and Turkey, UEFA Champions League semi-final between Barcelona and Real Madrid, and also the Copa America semi-final match between Argentina and Uruguay. Aside from invading the soccer pitch of these and other matches, he also has run through the starting grid of the 2004 Spanish Grand Prix, entered the basketball court during an exhibition game between the Memphis Grizzlies and FC Barcelona Bàsquet, run onto the pitch of the 2007 World Cup rugby Final between England and South Africa, accosted Federer during the Finals of the French Open in 2009, and invaded the stage during Spain's live entry in the 2010 Eurovision song contest.

Chad did go to the police station to bail his friend out in South Africa. On the way to the airport, Jimmy looked over at his buddy and asked, "Well, who won the game?"
