Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hack, hog line and house are the terms of what sport?

Answer: curling

The hack is the foothold in the ice from which a player pushes off when delivering a stone, which must be released before reaching in near hog line, and must travel at least over the far hogline to remain in play. The house is where the player is trying to place the rock, with the one lying closest to the central button lying 'shot'.
2. Ruck, scrum and knock-on are the terms of what sport?

Answer: rugby union

A ruck occurs when one or more players from each team are in physical contact with the ball between them, on the ground. (If the ball had not touched the ground it would be a maul.) They must be on their feet. A scrum is ordered after an infringement of the rules in order to restart the game.

The players from each team close up and the ball is placed between them. A knock on happens when the ball is moved in a forward direction from a player's hand or arm. What happens next depends on whether this is deemed to be an intentional or unintentional act.
3. Nutmeg and striker are the terms of what sport?

Answer: football (soccer)

To 'nutmeg' an opponent is to pass the ball between his legs. A striker is a player whose main object in life is to score goals.
4. Third man and square leg are the terms of what sport?

Answer: cricket

These are fielding positions.
5. Flare, 'tater' and big fly are the terms of what sport?

Answer: baseball

A flare is a base hit that falls between the infielders and outfielders, similar to what used to be known as a Texas leaguer. Tater and big fly are two of the many ways of describing a home run.
6. Mashie and niblick are the terms of what sport?

Answer: golf

Old fashioned names for particular golf clubs. Both were irons, the mashie being used for medium distance shots, the niblick chiefly for playing out of bunkers. (There was also a 'mashie niblick' which fell somewhere between the two.)
7. Frame, line and spare are the terms of what sport?

Answer: bowling

A line is a game of bowling, made up of ten frames.
8. In-run and Telemark are the terms of what sport?

Answer: ski jumping

The in-run is made up of the channels in the snow on the ski jumping hill in which the jumper places his (or her) skis to descend to the point of takeoff. The jumper then attempts to finish off the jump with a Telemark landing, without which style points will be lost.
9. Line, pit and slicks are the terms of what sport?

Answer: motor racing

Drivers want to keep to the racing 'line' for maximum speed and efficiency. Slicks are dry weather tires (tyres for the English amongst you) which will be put on the car in the team's pit by the pit crew.
10. Southpaw, slider, slurve are the terms of what sport?

Answer: baseball

A southpaw is a left handed player. Slider and slurve are types of pitches, though the latter (somewhere between a slider and a curve ball) is unlikely to yet appear in any dictionary! You hear it on radio and TV broadcasts though.
11. Southpaw, jab, hook are the terms of what sport?

Answer: boxing

A southpaw is a left-handed boxer. Jabs and hooks are types of punches.
12. Slashing, hooking, boarding are the terms of which sport?

Answer: ice hockey

All three are things that you should not do to your opponents in a game of (ice) hockey if you want to stay out of the penalty box.
13. Hooker, prop and flank are the terms of what sport?

Answer: Rugby Union

Positions in the scrum. The hooker tries to 'hook' the ball out with his feet to a team mate.
14. Googly and chinaman are the terms of which sport?

Answer: cricket

Two ways a bowler can deliver the ball to the batsman. A chinaman is defined in my Concise Oxford as a googly delivered by a left hander.
15. Lob, love and deuce are the terms of what sport?

Answer: tennis

Hope you enjoyed it, thanks for playing.
