Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many games did the Saints win in their first season of 1967?

Answer: 3

The Saints finished their first season with a 3-11 record.
2. What team did the Saints defeat for their first ever regular season win?

Answer: Philadelphia Eagles

On November 5, 1967, the Saints beat the Eagles 31-24 for their first win after starting the season 0-7. They also beat the Redskins and Falcons later in the season.
3. In their first season, the Saints had two future Hall of Famers on their roster. Jim Taylor was one. Who was the other?

Neither Taylor nor Atkins were inducted into the Hall of Fame based on their play with the Saints. Taylor played most of his career for the Green Bay Packers, and Atkins for the Chicago Bears. However, their veteran leadership was crucial to a very young, still learning team.
4. Which of the following set Saints' team records for yards rushing in a game, a season, and a career?

Answer: George Rogers

Rogers set a then NFL rookie record, and Saints team record with 1,674 yards rushing in 1981. He finished his Saints career with 4,267 yards. On opening day in 1983, he set the team's single game rushing record with 206 yards in a 28-17 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
5. The Saints had only one winning season during the 1970s.

Answer: False

The Saints' first ever winning season came in 1987, when they finished 12-3 under head coach Jim Mora.
6. Which quarterback known mainly for playing for a different team, set a Saints record with 3,970 yards passing in one season?

Everett, known mainly as a Los Angeles Ram, set a Saints record in 1995. He also set the team record with 26 TD passes the same year.

The Saints upset the Rams 31-28 in the first round of the 2000 playoffs. They then lost 34-16 to the Minnesota Vikings in the next round.
8. Which of these teams did the Saints beat for their first ever win on Monday Night Football?

Answer: Pittsburgh Steelers

The Saints lost their first six Monday night games before beating the Steelers, 27-24 in 1984.
9. Which of these teams did the Saints trade all but one of their 1999 draft picks to, so that they could select running back Ricky Williams?

Answer: Washington Redskins

In 1999, the Saints traded all but one of their draft picks to the Redskins so that they could move higher in the draft, and select Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams from the University of Texas. The Redskins in turn traded most of those picks to the Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos. Williams had a disappointing and short career with the Saints and was traded to the Miami Dolphins.

He shocked the NFL world with his sudden retirement announcement, just before the start of the 2004 season.
10. Which of these players was not a member of the Saints' dominating linebacker core of the late 80s/early 90s?

Answer: Gene Atkins

The Saints had arguably the best set of linebackers in NFL history in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The main four linebackers making up that unit were: Sam Mills, a Saint from (1986-1994), Vaughan Johnson (1986-1993), Pat Swilling (1986-1992), and Rickey Jackson (1981-1993). Gene Atkins was a safety for the team from (1987-1993). Jackson was the Saints' leader in quarterback sacks in the 20th century.
