Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This #72 played for Oklahoma State and had admitted to being functionally illiterate, even testifying before a Senate subcommittee on the subject of illiteracy.

Answer: Dexter Manley

Drafted in the fifth round, Dexter played nine years for the Redskins. He won two Super Bowl rings with the team, made the Pro-Bowl in 1986, and has been named as one of the 70 Greatest Redskins of all-time.
2. This #5 was drafted as the third overall pick by the Redskins in 1994. After his career as a bust on the football field, he then became a member of Congress as he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Answer: Heath Shuler

Shuler was drafted third overall out of the University of Tennessee in 1994. His exceptionally poor play led to a Washington quarterback controversy between Shuler and seventh round pick Gus Frerotte. Shuler lasted three years with the Redskins before he was traded to the New Orleans Saints after the 1996 season.

In 1997, Frerotte went to the Pro-Bowl while Shuler never came close to being successful in the NFL.
3. This #33 has been credited with making the forward pass a major part of the game of football. He was admitted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963.

Answer: Sammy Baugh

Drafted number six overall by the Redskins in 1937, Baugh was a two-time NFL Player of the Year, league passing champion six times, a member of the NFL 50th Anniversary All-Time Team, and a member of the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team. He played his entire career with the Redskins and served as coach of the New York Titans (1960-1961) and Houston Oilers (1964).
4. This #58 signed with the Redskins as a free-agent in 1988. He's probably best known as a member of the Bears' 46 Defense, but he won a Super Bowl ring with the Redskins in 1991 and was named NFC Defensive Player of the Year in 1992, while with Washington.

Answer: Wilber Marshall

Marshall finished his career with over 1000 tackles, twenty interceptions, and three touchdowns. He is also a member of the Redskins 70th Anniversary Team. Sadly, Marshall left Washington in 1993 when he was reunited with Buddy Ryan, as Marshall signed with the Houston Oilers.
5. This #97 was primarily a special teams ace. He was an undrafted free-agent in 2005. His primary position was linebacker, but he has seen time at defensive tackle, tight end, and offensive guard.

Answer: Lorenzo Alexander

Signed as an undrafted free-agent by the Carolina Panthers, Alexander signed with the Redskins' practice squad in 2006. He got his first game experience in 2007 and was a special teams stand-out every since. He made the Pro Bowl in 2012 and was the Redskins' Special Teams Player of the Year in 2011. In 2013, he signed as a free-agent with the Arizona Cardinals.
6. This #92 is widely considered to be the biggest free-agent bust in NFL history. While his career with the Redskins is quite unremarkable, except for his paycheck, he is mostly remembered (while with the Tennessee Titans) for stomping two times on the unprotected head of an opponent.

Answer: Albert Haynesworth

In 2009, Haynesworth signed a free-agent contract with the Redskins worth $100 million over seven years. The only thing bigger than Haynesworth's contract was his ever-expanding waistline. In 2010, he was voted the Laziest Player in the NFL in a survey taken by Sports Illustrated of active NFL players.

In his two years in Washington, he clashed with the coaching staff over the defensive scheme and off-field condition tests. To the delight of Redskins fans, he was traded to the New England Patriots in 2011 and has since faded into obscurity.

8. Who is the #26 who played defensive back played for the Redskins, before he went on to have a stand-out coaching career with the Colts and the Dolphins?

Answer: Don Shula

9. Who is the #26 who scored the only touchdown for the Redskins in Super Bowl VII?

Answer: Mike Bass

Bass was drafted in the 12th round by the Green Bay Packers. He joined the Redskins in 1969 and helped shore up the defense and lead them to Super Bowl VII. Bass played 100 games in his career and had thirty interceptions, six fumble recoveries, and scored four touchdowns.
