Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who led the Penguins in scoring?

Answer: Michel Ouellet

Ouellet, who played in all 80 games recording 63 points. Beech, who missed 12 games due to injury and a suspension wasn't far behind, scoring 62 points and receiving team MVP honors.
2. Which Penguin scored the most goals?

Answer: Michel Ouellet

Ouellet was on fire in the first half of the season, scoring 30 goals in 51 games before the All-Star break. However, he failed to score in 27 consecutive games, not recording his 31st goal until April 16th, the second-to-last game of the season, and he finished the season with that total. Abid scored 26 goals in 78 games, and Endicott had 24 goals in 68 games. Surovy had a relatively disappointing season with only 17 goals in 80 games, after scoring 14 goals in 30 games in the regular season last season, and six in the playoffs and 11 goals in 47 games for the NHLs Pittsburgh Penguins.
3. Which defenseman led the team in scoring?

Answer: Ryan Whitney

Whitney recorded six goals and 35 assists for 41 points in 80 games, which ranked tied for 16th among AHL defensemen and 10th among rookies in the league. Lupaschuk recorded 11 goals and 19 assists for 30 points in 65 games, and was tied for second on the team with seven power-play goals.
4. Who had the best plus/minus rating on the Pens?

Answer: Kris Beech

Murley led the team for most of the season, but Beech surpassed him once he returned from his injury and recorded a +17. Murley, who temporarily led the league in this category, had his plus/minus rating go down because of the team's late season skid, but he still finished with a +16. Ouellet and Scuderi each recorded a +15.
5. Which Penguin led the team in penalty minutes?

Answer: David Koci

Koci recorded 311 penalty minutes, which ranked seventh in the league. Beech had 146, Lupaschuk had 145, and Sgroi had 122.
6. Who wore #12 on their jersey for the Penguins?

Answer: Ben Eaves

Christensen wore #16, Talbot wore #21, and VandenBussche wore #37.
7. Who had the most power-play goals for the Pens?

Answer: Ramzi Abid

Abid had 10, Endicott and Lupaschuk had seven apiece, and Ouellet had six. The Pens, as a team, finished 17th in the 28-team AHL, in power-play percentage with a 14.58 percent rate, but they struggled mightily on the man advantage in the latter part of the season.
8. Who scored the most shorthanded goals?

Answer: Colby Armstrong

Armstrong led the team with three shorthanded goals, and Hussey, Murley, and Endicott scored two each. These were the only Pens' players who scored shorthanded goals, meaning the Pens, as a team, scored nine shorties on the season.
9. Who led the team in shots on goal?

Answer: Michel Ouellet

Surovy led the team in shots for the majority of the season, but Ouellet surpassed him, recording 235 shots. Surovy had 230, Abid had 200, and Armstrong had 166.
10. Who served as captain for the Pens?

Answer: Alain Nasreddine

After long time captain Tom Kostopoulos signed with the Los Angeles Kings organization, Nasreddine, a veteran defenseman, was appointed captain. Murley, who earned an award for his work in the community, and Beech were the two alternate captains.
11. In what place did the Pens finish in the East Division?

Answer: 4th

After a seven-game losing streak, Hershey was inching closer to the Pens for the fourth and final playoff spot. The Pens, who had only won two games against Hershey in eight games, recorded victories in the last two games they played against Hershey. The Pens then squeaked into third place, one point ahead of Norfolk, after defeating them in regulation in two back-to-back games.

It came down to the last game, but the Pens lost their game against Syracuse and Norfolk won their game against Philadelphia, so Norfolk took the third spot.
12. In terms of AHL rankings, was the Pens' power-play more successful than their penalty-kill?

Answer: Yes

Their power-play ranked 17th in the league, while their penalty-kill ranked 20th. They improved their penalty-kill, which was horrific in the first half of the season, but they got much worse on their power-play as the season wound down. Overall, the Pens' special teams were average at best.
13. How many points did the Pens get in the standings from overtime and shootout losses alone?

Answer: 14

The Pens were not very successful in the overtime and shootout periods, going 0-7 in overtime and 4-7 in shootouts, but at least they got points for these games.
14. The Pens played the Manitoba Moose on opening night. What was the score?

Answer: 6-3 Manitoba

The Pens didn't start off the season very well, going 0-3-1-0 in their first four games and allowing 22 goals in those games. They played Manitoba three other times in the season, winning one in regulation, winning one in a shootout, and losing one in a shootout.
15. Which of these division rivals defeated the Pens only once in regulation?

Answer: Philadelphia Phantoms

The Pens defeated them six times in regulation, and Philadelphia won three in a shootout, meaning the Pens got points in nine out of the ten games in the season series. Binghamton won seven out of the eight games against the Penguins, including three in overtime.

The Pens only win came on Halloween, which was the first game of the series, and it was a 2-0 shutout win posted by goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. Bridgeport was able to defeat the Pens twice in regulation in eight games. Hershey went 6-4, winning the season series against the Pens. Norfolk, another team in the East Division, also only managed to defeat the Penguins once in regulation.
