Answer: McEnroe 18-16

McEnroe saved five match points before prevailing 18-16 to take it to a fifth set. However, Borg won the final set 8-6 to win his fifth successive title. In the women's final, Evonne Goolagong Cawley won her first title since 1971, beating Chris Evert in straight sets.
2. In 1981, John McEnroe gained revenge for his 1980 defeat by defeating Bjorn Borg in four sets in the final. Chris Evert won the women's final by defeating which Czech player, making her final debut?

Answer: Hana Mandlikova

Mandlikova had won the French Open a few weeks previously, but was no match for Evert in the final, the American winning 6-2 6-2. McEnroe won his first Wimbledon crown by defeating Borg 4-6 7-6 7-6 6-4.
3. John McEnroe's bid for back-to-back titles in 1982 failed when beaten in the final by _______ , who was bidding for his first crown in eight years.

Answer: Jimmy Connors

Connors won an epic five set final 3-6 6-3 6-7 7-6 6-4. In the women's final, Martina Navratilova won her third Wimbledon crown (she won in 1978 and 1979), with a three set victory over Chris Evert.
4. 1983 saw two one-sided finals, Martina Navratilova thrashing Andrea Jaeger 6-0 6-3, and John McEnroe winning 6-2 6-2 6-2 against which unseeded player?

Answer: Chris Lewis

Chris Lewis, from New Zealand, had won an epic five setter against Kevin Curren in the semi-final, but was no match for McEnroe in the final. The American lost only one set throughout the whole tournament.
5. In 1984, John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova successfully defended their respective titles, with only one set being dropped in total between them throughout the tournament. Which Australian, more noted for his doubles prowess, took a set off McEnroe in the first round?

Answer: Paul McNamee

McNamee won the third set against McEnroe before going down 6-4 6-4 6-7 6-1. The American was only taken as far as a tiebreak on one more occasion over the remaining fortnight, by Pat Cash in the semis. In the final, McEnroe destroyed Jimmy Connors 6-1 6-1 6-2. Navratilova was equally dominant, only needing to go as far as a tiebreak once, in the final against Chris Evert, which she won 7-6 6-2.
6. In 1985, how did Boris Becker create Wimbledon history?

Answer: All of these are correct

Becker was just 17, and unseeded, when he defeated Kevin Curran in the final, to become the first German winner. Martina Navratilova came back from the loss of the opening set to defeat Chris Evert in the women's final.
7. In 1986, Boris Becker defended his title successfully, beating which European player in the final?

Answer: Ivan Lendl

Lendl was making first first appearance in a Wimbledon final, but was swept aside by Becker in straight sets. Martina Navratilova won her fifth consecutive title, defeating Hana Mandlikova in the final.
8. In 1987, Boris Becker's bid for a third straight title was ended in the second round. Which unheralded Australian caused one of the biggest upsets in Wimbledon history to oust the German?

Answer: Peter Doohan

Doohan, who won just one singles title in his professional career, was expected to offer little resistance to Becker, but triumphed 7-6 4-6 6-2 6-4. It was another Australian, Pat Cash, who lifted the title, beating Ivan Lendl in the final. It was business as usual for Martina Navratilova, who won her sixth consecutive title, beating Steffi Graf in the final.
9. In 1988, Martina Navratilova's long reign as Wimbledon champion (she had won six straight) was finally ended. Which player beat her in the final?

Answer: Steffi Graf

Navratilova led 7-5 2-0 in the final, but Graf stormed back to win 12 of the next 13 games to lift her first Wimbledon title. Stefan Edberg won his first men's title, beating Boris Becker in four sets in the final.
10. Stefan Edberg's bid for a second consecutive tile in 1989 was ended in the final, by which player?

Answer: Boris Becker

Becker won his third title (he won in 1985 and 1986), beating Edberg in straight sets in the final, to avenge his loss of the previous year. Steffi Graf defeated Martina Navratlova in the women's final for the second straight year, 6-2 6-7 6-1.
