Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1990, Martina Navratilova won an unprecedented ninth women's singles title at Wimbledon, defeating which American player in the final?

Answer: Zina Garrison

Garrison, who had upset defending champion Steffi Graf in the semis, was making her first appearance in the final of a Grand Slam tournament. In the final, 33-year old Navratilova proved too strong, winning 6-4, 6-1. In the men's event, Stefan Edberg saw a two-set lead disappear against defending champion Boris Becker, but the Swede rallied to take the fifth set, and his second Wimbledon crown.
2. In 1991, both men's and women's titles were won by Germans ; which two players emerged triumphant?

Answer: Michael Stich and Steffi Graf

Graf won her third title in an epic final against Gabriela Sabatini, eventually winning 8-6 in the third set. Becker was hot favourite to defeat his fellow countryman Stich in the men's final, but Stich, who had ousted Stefan Edberg in the semis, triumphed in straight sets.
3. The 1992 Wimbledon men's final saw the first Grand Slam singles title for which charismatic player?

Answer: Andre Agassi

Agassi survived a five-set thriller against Boris Becker in the quarter-finals, before thrashing John McEnroe in the semis. In the final, he won a five-set epic against Ivanisevic. Steffi Graf won the women's title, thrashing Monica Seles 6-2, 6-1 in the final.
4. 1993 will be remembered by many fans for the scenes at the end of the women's final, when which player burst into tears and had to be comforted by the Duchess of Kent?

Answer: Jana Novotna

Novotna led Steffi Graf 4-1, 40-15, in the final set, before losing her nerve and blowing it. Graf won five straight games to land her 5th Wimbledon crown. Pete Sampras won his first men's final, defeating Jim Courier in four sets.
5. Martina Navratilova was going for an amazing tenth Wimbledon crown in 1994, but was thwarted by which player in the final?

Answer: Conchita Martinez

Martinez had never appeared in the final of a Grand Slam event before, and, despite her age(she was 37), most pundits expected Navratilova's experience to sway the outcome. However, the Spaniard, who had outlasted Lori McNeil in a marathon semi-final match, landed her first Wimbledon crown by the score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Pete Sampras retained the men's title with a straight sets final win over Goran Ivanisevic.
6. Pete Sampras completed a hat-trick of Wimbledon titles in 1995, defeating which former champion in the final?

Answer: Boris Becker

After a couple of disappointing seasons in which his world ranking had slipped somewhat, Becker had a renaissance in 1995, but was unable to overcome Sampras, the American winning the final in four sets. Steffi Graf was women's champion for the sixth time, beating Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in a thrilling final which ended 7-5 in the final set.
7. In 1996, Pete Sampras' bid for a fourth straight title was ended in the quarter finals by which player, who would go on to become the first-ever champion from his country?

Answer: Richard Krajicek (Netherlands)

Krajicek was seeded only 17th for the event, but had an amazing tournament, dropping only one set, to New Zealander Brett Steven in the 3rd round. In the final he overwhelmed unseeded MaliVai Washington 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. In the women's singles, Steffi Graf repeated her final victory over Arantxa Sánchez Vicario from the previous year, this time in straight sets.
8. In 1997, which player became the youngest winner of the women's singles since Lottie Dod in 1887?

Answer: Martina Hingis

Hingis was just 16 when she beat Jana Novotna in three sets in the final. Pete Sampras won his fourth men's singles title when he thrashed Cedric Pioline 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 in the final.
9. Jana Novotna finally won her first Wimbledon crown in 1998, defeating which French player in the final?

Answer: Nathalie Tauziat

Novota put all her past demons behind her in 1998, scoring straight set victories over Venus Williams, Martina Hingis and Tauziat on her way to her first Grand Slam title. Pete Sampras won his fifth men's title, but had to go to a fifth set to see off Goran Ivanisevic in the final.
10. Which American woman won her first Wimbledon singles title in 1999?

Answer: Lindsay Davenport

Davenport didn't drop a set throughout the tournament on her way to her first title, beating Steffi Graf in the final 6-4, 7-5. In the men's singles final, Pete Sampras won his sixth title, beating Andre Agassi in straight sets.
