Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before the NHL lockout began in the fall, the Winnipeg Jets locked up a few long-term contracts with their players. Which one of these did *not* sign a new contract or extension in the 2012 off-season?

Answer: Bryan Little (C)

General Manager Kevin Chevaldayoff had a busy off-season for the Winnipeg Jets, ensuring that some of the team's top players were secured for multiple years. On June 25th, the Jets announced that starting goalie Ondrej Pavelec had signed a new 5-year contract. On the 27th of July, the team announced a 5-year contract extension for defenseman Toby Enstrom. The last long-term contract went to Evander Kane on September 15th as he signed a 6-year contract. Other (shorter term) contracts reached in the off-season included:
Jim Slater - Jun. 13
Alexei Ponikarovsky - Jul. 1
Derek Meech - Jul. 1
Olli Jokinen - Jul. 2
Al Montoya - Jul. 4
Ben Maxwell - Jul. 6
Mark Dekanich - Jul. 6
Paul Postma - Jul. 13
Kyle Wellwood - Jul. 13
Maxime Macenauer - Jul. 23
Spencer Machacek - Sept. 11
2. Which Winnipeg Jet was part of the NHL Players' Association (NHLPA) Negotiating Committee that worked on establishing a new collective bargaining agreement with the NHL?

Answer: Ron Hainsey

In all there were 31 players chosen from 21 different teams to be on the Negotiating Committee. It was not an easy job for these players, as they often got flack for their efforts - not only from fans, but even from other players. After the 2012-13 season was completed, Ron Hainsey became a free agent, and signed with the Carolina Hurricanes shortly before the beginning of the 2013-14 NHL season.
3. The Winnipeg Jets drafted defenseman Jacob Trouba in the first round (9th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. How many games did he play in the 2012-13 season?

Answer: 0

Although there was much speculation on whether or not Jacob Trouba would play his first NHL season immediately after being drafted, the Jets organization thought it best to give him another year of seasoning, which he did with the University of Michigan. Over 37 games he got 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points.

He also earned the All-CCHA Best Offensive Defenseman award. Trouba also participated in the 2013 World Junior Hockey Championship for the United States, helping his team to win Gold.
4. With a shortened season, teams were limited to playing within their own conference. Which of these divisions did the Winnipeg Jets NOT play against?

Answer: Central Division

Even though the Jets had relocated from Atlanta in 2011, the NHL and the Board of Governors had not yet settled on how to realign the teams and divisions prior to the 2012-13 season. Thus, the Jets remained in the Southeast Division for the shortened season.

The Eastern Conference included the Atlantic Division (New Jersey, NY Islanders, NY Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh), the Northeast Division (Boston, Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto), and the Southeast Division (Carolina, Florida, Tampa Bay, Washington, Winnipeg).
5. Chris Mason was the Jets' backup goalie in the 2011-12 season, but he became a free agent in the off-season and signed with the Nashville Predators. Who did the Jets sign to take his place?

Answer: Al Montoya

Al Montoya played in 31 games with the New York Islanders during the 2011-12 season, accruing a 9-11-5 record with a 3.10 GAA and a .893 save percentage. In his first season with the Jets he only played in seven games, earning a record of 3-1-0 with a 2.91 GAA and a .899 save percentage. Just 351 minutes played. Starter Ondrej Pavelec played in 44 of 48 games, garnering a 21-20-3 record with a 2.80 GAA and a save percentage of .905.
6. In the second half of the shortened season, the Winnipeg Jets followed up their longest losing streak with their longest winning streak - both of them the same number of games. How long were the two streaks?

Answer: 5 games

The Jets lost five games in a row between March 28th and April 4th:

Winnipeg at Pittsburgh (0-4)
Carolina at Winnipeg (3-1)
Winnipeg at NY Rangers (2-4)
Winnipeg at NY Islanders (2-5)
Winnipeg at Montreal (1-4)

Then they followed that with five wins in a row between April 6th and 18th:

Philadelphia at Winnipeg (1-4)
Buffalo at Winnipeg (1-4)
Florida at Winnipeg (2-7)
Tampa Bay at Winnipeg (3-4)
Carolina at Winnipeg (3-4)

This five-game winning streak extended to a seven-game undefeated (in regulation) streak with a 5-4 shootout win over the NY Islanders on April 20th and a 2-1 road win in Buffalo on the 22nd.
7. The Jets did not top any statistical categories in the league in the 2012-13 season, but they did finish 30th overall in one statistic. Which one?

Answer: Power play percentage

With only 20 power play goals in 145 attempts, the Jets' 13.79% success rate was good for 30th place in the league. 1st place went to division rivals Washington Capitals, who had 44/164 (26.83%). The league average was 18.2%. The Jets were 24th overall on both the penalty kill (79.71%) and with goal differential (126 GF, 141 GA) of -15. For overall penalty minutes, the Jets were 14th on the list for the least number of minutes (535).
8. One of the Jets received a serious injury in February while the team was visiting the Carolina Hurricanes. During the morning practice, his femoral artery was accidentally severed by a teammate's skate. To whom did this happen?

Answer: Zach Redmond

Zach Redmond was rushed to hospital to undergo an emergency surgery. He was told that, at best, he would have a 50-50 chance of ever skating again. A week later, they upgraded his prognosis to requiring a year to recover. Then, a couple of weeks later it was further upgraded to the beginning of next season's training camp (only seven months away). Amazingly, Redmond found himself skating again on April 4th, just six weeks after the accident! Of course, he did not return to active play in the NHL until after more conditioning in the off-season.
9. Not just the captain of the team, this player also finished the 2012-13 season as the top scorer for the Winnipeg Jets. What is his name?

Answer: Andrew Ladd

Andrew Ladd became the captain while the team was still the Atlanta Thrashers, early in the 2010-11 season. During his first season in Winnipeg, Ladd finished 4th in scoring with 50 points in 82 games. Over the 48 games in the shortened 2012-13 season, Ladd almost managed to match his total from the previous year, finishing with a record of 18 goals and 28 assists for 46 points.

His 28 assists was the most on the team, and his 18 goals was just one behind Blake Wheeler's 19.
10. For the second year in a row, the Jets finished out of the playoffs, but they still managed a winning record, and finished 9th in the Eastern Conference. In what position did they finish in their division?

Answer: 2nd

The Washington Capitals were the only team from the Southeast Division to make it into the playoffs, and while they held 3rd place in the conference by virtue of winning the division, they actually finished 4th by points.

The Southeast Division final standings for 2012-13 (and final position in conference):

1. Washington Capitals (27-18-3, 57 pts) - 4th
2. Winnipeg Jets (24-21-3, 51 pts) - 9th
3. Carolina Hurricanes (19-25-4, 42 pts) - 13th
4. Tampa Bay Lightning (18-26-4, 40 pts) - 14th
5. Florida Panthers (15-27-6, 36 pts) - 15th
